Job summary

Nigel Bowes Academy on Ensbury Avenue, Bournemouth, seeks an inspiring teacher to join an outstanding special school for ages 5-11, mainly with SEMH needs and often on the autism spectrum. You will lead a class of up to eight pupils, develop engaging lessons, and deliver a high-quality curriculum within a supportive environment.

We welcome applications from both SEN-experienced and mainstream teachers who can guide vulnerable learners towards success, including Early Career Teachers.

Qualifications

  • Experience of working with pupils with special educational needs is desirable, however applications from mainstream colleagues are welcomed.
  • Early Career Teachers are encouraged to apply.

Job description

We are seeking to appoint an inspiring and dedicated teacher to join Nigel Bowes Academy, Ensbury Avenue, Bournemouth, BH10 4HG – an outstanding special school for pupils aged 5-11 who present predominantly with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. A significant number of pupils are also on the Autism spectrum and may have other related needs.

The role requires a proactive and creative approach to developing experiences within our curriculum that will motivate pupils to want to learn beyond the classroom, enhancing cultural capital and providing memorable opportunities that will support them on their journey towards adulthood. The successful candidate will also lead a class of up to 8 pupils, creating a positive learning environment and delivering a high-quality curriculum for those learners.

Experience of working with pupils with special educational needs is desirable, however, we welcome applications from mainstream colleagues who understand the approaches needed to guide our vulnerable young people towards success. We also welcome applications from Early Career Teachers.

Skills Summary:-

  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons as directed.
  • Teach, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned to you, including thesetting and marking of work carried out by the pupil in school and elsewhere.
  • Assess, record and report on the development, progress and attainment of pupils whereappropriate.Other activities
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and any class or groupassigned.
  • Provide guidance, advice and support to pupils on educational, social and emotionalmatters and make relevant records and reports on personal and social needs whennecessary. (including further education and future careers).
  • Communicate and consult with the parents of pupils and with school governors.
  • Communicate and cooperate with persons or bodies outside the school whereappropriate.
  • Participate in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above.
  • Participate in arrangements made for the appraisal of performance for yourself andthat of other teachers.
  • Perform particular duties as may be reasonably assigned to you by the Principal fromtime to time.
  • Assessments and reports
  • Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating toindividual pupils and groups where appropriate.
  • Professional development
  • Review, from time to time, your methods of teaching and programmes of work with theSenior Leadership Team.
  • Participate in arrangements for your further training and professional development as ateacher, and to share these experiences with colleagues, both informally and at staffmeetings.
  • In the case of a teacher serving an induction period pursuant to the Inductionregulations, participating in arrangements for their supervision or training.
  • Educational methods
  • Advise and co-operate with the Principal and other teachers (or any one or more ofthem) in preparing and developing whole school courses of study, teaching materials,teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoralarrangements.
  • Discipline, health & safety
  • Maintain good order and discipline among the pupils you are teaching and share in thecorporate responsibility for the well-being and behaviour of all pupils in school.
  • Safeguard the pupils’ and your own safety, both when authorised to be on the schoolpremises and when you are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere. Participate in meetings, including preparation and delivery of reports, at the schoolwhich relate to the curriculum or administration and organisation, including pastoralarrangements.
  • Cover
  • Supervising and, so far as practicable, teaching any pupils whose teacher is notavailable to teach them.
  • External assessments
  • Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for external examinations, assessingpupils for the purposes of such examinations and recording and reporting suchassessments; and participating in arrangements for pupils' presentations, andconducting such examinations.
  • Management
  • Take such part as may be required in the review, development and management ofactivities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school.
  • If applicable, contribute to the selection for appointment and professional developmentof other teachers and support staff, including the induction and assessment of newteachers and teachers serving induction periods.
  • If applicable, assist the Principal in carrying out threshold assessments of other teachersfor whom you have management responsibilities.
  • Co-ordinate or manage the work of other staff, including Teaching Assistants.
  • Administration
  • Participate in administrative and organisational tasks related to such duties as aredescribed above, including the direction or supervision of persons providing support forthe teachers in the school.
  • Attend assemblies and/or acts of corporate school worship, as required.
  • Mark form registers, ensuring absences or lateness are noted and appropriate actiontaken where there are concerns.
  • Assist in the supervision of pupils, whether these duties are performed before, during orafter school sessions.
