Job summary

SP Energy Networks is recruiting a Civils Engineer (Development) to lead site inspections for 11kV to 33kV substations from our Prenton offices on Wirral, with some site visits across the SP Manweb area. You will ensure works follow approved plans and SPEN specs, providing design guidance to internal teams and contractors.

With 5+ years in civil engineering and a full driving licence, you will review as-built documentation, manage finances, and mentor junior staff while helping deliver major

Qualifications

  • NVQ, HND, or bachelor's qualification in a construction-related subject such as building surveying, civil engineering, structural engineering, or construction management
  • Membership of a relevant professional body is highly valued
  • Solid knowledge of structural and civil engineering design approaches and material properties
  • Practical familiarity with construction methods and experience across common forms of construction
  • Capability to interpret construction drawings with meticulous attention to detail
  • Knowledge of building regulations, construction processes, legislation, and requirements
  • 5 years or more of relevant experience, with great attention to detail and pride in design quality
  • Full clean driving licence (required)
  • Experience working in the electrical industry is desirable though not essential
  • Strong numeracy and computer literacy skills
  • Effective communication capabilities that enable you to provide clear advice and guidance
  • Effective problem-solving skills and the capability to work well within a team environment
  • Capacity to meet deadlines consistently
  • Negotiation skills and the confidence to provide professional advice and guidance to colleagues and contractors
  • Availability to travel as required across the region to fulfill site inspection accountabilities

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular inspections of building work at various stages of completion, measuring and sampling building materials to verify standards
  • Confirm construction work aligns with approved plans and SPEN specifications, providing technical design assistance during project phases
  • Review end-of-project returns and as-built documentation for proper SPEN recording
  • Review financial applications to ensure alignment with works delivered on site
  • Maintain quality and consistency of technical and construction output across projects
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and customers on behalf of ScottishPower
  • Promote an exemplary safety culture and ensure safety legislation is implemented
  • Mentor and train less experienced team members and trainees
  • Manage a 6-month work bank of site inspections and oversee civil works up to 33kV, ~£25m per annum

As a Civils Engineer (Development), you will play a vital role in this transformation by undertaking site inspections of substation construction projects from 11kV to 33kV. You will ensure works are carried out according to approved construction plans, SPEN building specifications, and best practice standards. Using your professional judgement and technical expertise, you will provide design and construction guidance to internal Design functions and external Framework Contractors. This is an exciting opportunity to make a tangible impact on critical infrastructure that powers communities across the North West of England.

What you'll be doing
  • Conduct regular inspections of building work at various stages of completion, measuring and sampling building materials to verify their quality meets required standards
  • Confirm that construction work aligns with approved plans and SPEN specifications, while providing technical design assistance to SPM Design, customer engagement teams, and other teams during project design phases
  • Become well-versed in the SPEN Civil specification for Primary Substation Civil works, reviewing end-of-project returns including as-built documentation to ensure civil works are properly recorded within SPEN corporate systems
  • Review financial applications made via framework arrangements to ensure they align with works delivered on site
  • Maintain quality and consistency of technical and construction output across all projects
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders and customers on behalf of ScottishPower, facilitating delivery of strategic goals
  • Promote an exemplary safety culture, ensuring all safety legislation is implemented and delivered through activities and incorporated into project designs
  • Contribute to team development by mentoring and training less experienced team members, graduates, and trainees, helping to build capability across the organization
  • Manage a 6-month work bank of site inspections in coordination with design teams, overseeing civil works for Primary Projects in the delivery phase up to and including 33kV, typically valued at approximately £25m per annum
What you'll bring
  • NVQ, HND, or bachelor's qualification in a construction-related subject such as building surveying, civil engineering, structural engineering, or construction management
  • Membership of a relevant professional body such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE), or the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is highly valued
  • Solid knowledge of structural and civil engineering design approaches and material properties
  • Practical familiarity with construction methods and experience across common forms of construction
  • Capability to interpret construction drawings with meticulous attention to detail
  • Knowledge of building regulations, construction processes, legislation, and requirements
  • 5 years or more of relevant experience, with great attention to detail and pride in design quality
