Job summary

Portsmouth City Council's Green & Clean service is recruiting a permanent operative to combine grounds maintenance with cleaning across the city. The work spans gardening, hedge and grass work, seasonal planting and cleaning at high-rise blocks, sheltered schemes, play parks and car parks, mostly outdoors in all weathers.

The role is physical and shifts with business need, Monday to Friday day pattern and possible key holding. A full UK driving licence is required.

Qualifications

• Understanding of health and safety practice and safe working methods.
• Accurate spoken English and ability to converse at ease with customers and colleagues.
• Good communication and listening skills.
• Ability to prioritise tasks and work in an organised, methodical way.
• Good decision-making and taking responsibility for actions.
• Calm and diplomatic in challenging situations.

Responsibilities

• Carry out gardening and internal and external cleaning in all weathers.
• Carry out grounds maintenance such as weed spraying, grass mowing and hedge trimming.
• Complete seasonal planting projects to improve the appearance of the city.
• Carry out cleaning at high-rise blocks, sheltered schemes, play parks and car parks.
• Carry out landscaping, including clearing overgrown areas.
• Undertake specialist cleaning such as steaming, jet-washing and buffing when required.
• Use stairs, empty full bins and manoeuvre cleaning and gardening equipment.
• Maintain and care for all gardening tools.
• Work safely and demonstrate safe methods when cleaning.
• Speak to residents and handle customer feedback.
• Report bulky items, communal repairs and anti-social behaviour to the relevant departments.
