Children’s Speech & Language Therapist

This is an exciting opportunity for a newly qualified Speech and Language Therapist or an experienced band 5 Therapist to work with our innovative and supportive team.

Peterborough speech and language therapy service is a small team based in a diverse city that has convenient transport links. As a service we pride ourselves on supervision and support, CPD opportunities and the breadth of caseload experience/therapy we enable our therapists.

We have received positive feedback from our current band 5 Therapists including "The team were incredibly welcoming and supportive, and I gained and continue to gain a diverse range of skills across all aspects of paediatric speech and language therapy" and "I have developed my confidence and knowledge across many areas of speech, language and communication, but also my ability to remain resilient when facing the many pressures in an NHS role".

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the independent management of a clinical caseload of pre-school and school-aged children in community settings. This may include community clinics, pre-school settings, mainstream and special schools in and around the area of Peterborough. The client group is children who have a range of difficulties in understanding and/or using speech and language.

Job responsibilities

  • To independently manage a caseload of pre-school and school age children who have speech, language and communication difficulties.
  • To undertake a range of assessments, both standardised and non-standardised to identify presenting speech, language and communication needs
  • To plan, deliver and evaluate intervention programmes following professional guidelines and agreed service standards
  • As part of that process, to be able to plan appropriate long term and short term goals working towards discharge
  • To undertake administrative duties connected with the caseload including maintenance of case notes and provision of written reports, following service standards
  • To manage own time and prioritise workload.
  • To ensure that all work is carried out in close collaboration with all those involved in childrens care so that the approach to intervention and support is co-ordinated and comprehensive
  • To identify when there is a need for a second opinion, referring to senior colleagues or SLT specialists as appropriate
  • To make onward referral as appropriate
  • To identify any variations to service delivery or demands and inform the Lead Practitioner of the likely impact on the service
  • The post holder may be required to attend meetings, supervision and/or deliver interventions outside of their usual area of work, if necessary, in order to deliver to the countywide service specification
Person Specification
Education / Qualifications
  • Degree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Registered Member of RCSLT
  • Registered Member of HCPC
Experience
  • Experience working with children in a variety of settings (student or qualified)
  • Working in a mainstream school
  • Working in a special school
Knowledge & Skills
  • Able to demonstrate commitment to high quality care and service provision
  • Highly developed auditory perceptual skills and the ability to transcribe speech phonetically
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to convey sensitive or distressing information to parents/carers
  • Ability to work confidently with parents/carers
  • Attended relevant training e.g. Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) Makaton, Fluency, Parent Child Interaction (PCI)
Personal Qualities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including observation, listening and empathy
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
Other
  • Ability to use a range of software to support clinical and administrative work
