St Gemma's is a local, independent charity providing expert palliative care, research, and support to the people of Leeds for over 45 years. It offers services both in the Hospice and in the community to support those with life-threatening illnesses. The Academic Unit, a partnership between St Gemma's and the University of Leeds, aims to improve end-of-life care through research, training, and clinical practice. Funding is mainly through fundraising, legacies, retail shops, with around 30% from NHS contributions and some from commercial activities.
Reporting to the Chief Executive and a key member of the Hospice Executive, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) oversees support functions including finance, estates, facilities, and IM&T. The COO also acts as the Company Secretary, providing governance leadership, ensuring compliance, and managing risk and sustainability across the organization.
The ideal candidate is a qualified accountant with senior leadership experience, managing similar portfolios, and knowledgeable in governance. Experience in contract management, digital, and commercial areas is advantageous. Most importantly, you should have a passion for social impact and community service, demonstrating energetic, confident, and compassionate leadership.
