Job summary

University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Head of Clinical Coding Operations to lead the Trust's Clinical Coding Service. You will drive performance, quality, and workforce leadership across inpatient, outpatient and emergency department activity, partnering with clinicians and corporate teams to improve documentation and outcomes.

You will oversee transformation projects, implement CDI approaches, and support AI-enabled tools while ensuring readiness for national changes

Qualifications

• Qualified Clinical Coding professional with leadership experience.
• Evidence of CPD in coding, education or assurance.
• Experience in NHS coding and service improvement is essential.
• Leadership training or postgraduate qualification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead operational delivery of Clinical Coding across inpatient, outpatient and ED activities.
• Develop and mentor a high-performing workforce with succession planning.
• Drive coding quality, productivity, timeliness and backlog reduction.
• Collaborate with clinicians and corporate teams to improve documentation and engagement.
• Lead service transformation including expansion of outpatient/ED coding and CDI approaches.
• Support coding assurance with the Health Information Management Data Assurance team.
• Champion digital innovation and AI-enabled coding readiness, including ICD-11.
