Job summary

HMGCC, the UK's national security engineering specialist, seeks a Chief Engineer to own the technical health of our engineering system. You will guide guardrails, ensure coherence, security and resilience while delivering at pace.

You will lead our Heads of Profession, influence the senior leadership team and sponsor communities of practice as we adopt emerging technologies and new ways of working. This on-site role is based mainly in Milton Keynes with occasional travel.

Qualifications

• Deep technical expertise in software or hardware engineering.
• Proven leadership of large engineering teams.
• Strategic foresight balancing delivery with sustainability.
• Strong influence and communication across product and delivery.
• Risk management of high-stakes technical environments.

Responsibilities

• Own the guardrails: define and evolve engineering standards, security expectations, and lifecycle processes.
• Protect the future: ensure that delivery pace does not erode long-term viability of systems.
• Drive the AI agenda: lead on AI/ML tooling across the organisation.
• Act as the final word: escalate technical tensions and sign off on safety and engineering compliance.
• Develop the profession: line manage and sponsor Heads of Profession.
• Modernise infrastructure: steer engineering facilities and partner with other areas.
