Job summary

Centrica Plc is offering a Mechanical Engineering Technician apprenticeship (dual discipline) at Level 3. The program combines classroom learning with supervised, practical experience in mechanical systems across CBS distributed energy and decarbonisation projects.

Training spans design, installation, testing, commissioning, operation and maintenance, with two positions available and a dedicated training provider: THE TRAFFORD AND STOCKPORT COLLEGE GROUP.

Qualifications

  • GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above (essential).
  • Science GCSE at grade 4 or above (desirable).
  • GCSEs reflect basic numeracy and literacy requirements for the apprenticeship.

Responsibilities

  • Complete the agreed apprenticeship programme and assessments within planned timescales.
  • Work under supervision, escalating concerns promptly.
  • Support preparation and checking of mechanical engineering information and documentation.
  • Assist with selection and application of mechanical equipment for HVAC, pumps, piping and related systems.
  • Gain practical experience of fluid systems, heat transfer and pressure systems.
  • Support site surveys, testing, commissioning and fault finding; document as-built information.

Job description

Introduction

To develop into a competent Mechanical engineering technician by combining structured academic learning with supervised, practical experience across the design, installation, testing, commissioning, operation and maintenance of mechanical systems used in CBS distributed energy and decarbonisation projects.

What You'll Do
  • Complete the agreed apprenticeship programme, off-the-job learning, assessments, portfolio and end-point assessment requirements within the planned timescales
  • Work under appropriate supervision and within personal competence, escalating uncertainty, hazards, technical concerns and design changes promptly
  • Support the preparation and checking of mechanical engineering information, including calculations, equipment schedules, layouts, schematics, specifications, scopes of work and technical submissions
  • Assist with the selection and application of mechanical equipment for systems such as CHP, heat pumps, heating and cooling networks, gas systems, pumps, pipework, heat exchangers, ventilation and associated balance-of-plant
  • Gain practical experience of fluid systems, heat transfer, pressure systems, materials, valves, supports, insulation, maintenance access and equipment interfaces, as relevant to assigned projects
  • Support site surveys, installation inspections, pressure and integrity testing, commissioning, fault finding, maintenance and the capture of accurate as-built information
  • Use engineering software, document-control systems and standard CBS templates accurately, maintaining clear records and traceability
  • Participate in design reviews, project meetings, lessons learned and continuous-improvement activities, contributing constructively and completing agreed actions
  • Apply CBS safety expectations, mechanical safe-working principles, risk controls, site rules, permit requirements and environmental responsibilities at all times
  • Build effective working relationships with colleagues, customers, suppliers, subcontractors and the training provider, representing CBS professionally
  • Engineering, Project Management, Construction, Commissioning, Operations & Maintenance, SHEQ, Commercial and Procurement teams; clients, suppliers, subcontractors and the appointed training provider
Training Outcome

This is a pipeline role with a view to roll off onto an enduring role within the CBS business.
