Job summary

Dovetail and Slate are recruiting a Catering Tutor to deliver practical catering training on-site at HMP Sudbury in Derbyshire. You will work with small groups to teach professional cookery techniques and food safety, supporting learners toward successful qualifications and future employability.

The role focuses on hands-on kitchen instruction, progress tracking, and rehabilitation through hospitality skills, with full-time permanent employment and benefits.

Qualifications

• Essential Level 2 qualification (or higher) in Catering, Culinary Arts, or Professional Cookery.
• Substantial hands-on industry experience in commercial kitchens, catering operations, or hospitality environments.
• Proven experience delivering vocational or on-the-job catering training.
• Teaching qualification desirable; full support to achieve required qualifications during probation.

Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging, high-quality practical catering and food preparation courses.
• Establish and maintain tailored training plans for all learners with guidance and feedback.
• Ensure kitchen hygiene, food safety and health & safety standards in an open prison setting.
• Assess learners' practical work and maintain detailed course documentation.
• Inspire learners to develop work-readiness and culinary skills for employment after release.

The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a practical, dedicated Catering Tutor to join our prison education team on-site at HMP Sudbury-a Category D open prison in Derbyshire. In this hands-on, rewarding role, you will deliver catering qualifications to small groups of prison-based learners, helping them develop professional cookery techniques and positive workplace habits to support their long-term resettlement and career aspirations.

What You Will Be Doing

• Culinary Instruction: Plan and deliver engaging, high-quality practical catering and food preparation courses, combining hands-on kitchen training with essential food safety and culinary theory.
• Individual Training Plans: Establish and maintain tailored training plans for all learners, offering continuous guidance, support, and constructive feedback throughout their qualification journey.
• Food Safety & Kitchen Discipline: Instill strict industry compliance, including kitchen hygiene, food safety standards, health & safety regulations, and professional discipline within an open prison setting.
• Progress Tracking: Assess learner practical work, track achievements accurately, and maintain detailed course documentation in line with awarding body expectations.
• Rehabilitation & Resettlement Focus: Inspire and motivate learners to build self-esteem, work-readiness, and culinary competence aligned directly with employment opportunities in the commercial hospitality industry upon release.

What We Are Looking For

• Trade Qualifications: Essential Level 2 qualification (or higher) in Catering, Culinary Arts, or Professional Cookery.
• Vocational Expertise: Substantial hands-on industry experience as an expert in commercial kitchens, catering operations, or hospitality environments.
• Training Experience: Proven experience delivering vocational or on-the-job catering training, with the ability to use varied delivery methods to engage diverse learners.
• Teaching Qualifications: A teaching or assessing qualification is desirable. No teaching qualification? No problem! Full support and funding will be provided to help you achieve the required qualifications during your probationary period.
