Job summary

IKEA Gateshead is seeking a skilled Carpenter to join its store team. You will craft high quality furniture and contribute to store projects on the shop floor, collaborating with colleagues to meet deadlines and maintain safety standards.

Starting salary is £28,120 per year, with a 39-hour week (Mon–Fri) and occasional night and weekend shifts in line with the IKEA calendar. This hands-on role invites creativity and practical problem solving in a fast-paced retail environment.

Qualifications

  • Carpentry qualification (NVQ Level 2 or equivalent) and a passion for woodwork.
  • Experience in retail or commercial environments is preferred.
  • Clear communication and ability to explain concepts and instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Follow work briefs to implement store fixtures, wall constructions, podiums, and furniture installations.
  • Plan and source materials, manage costs, and maximise efficiency.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to keep the store in excellent condition for customers.

What we offer

  • Starting salary of £28,120 per annum, based on competence and experience, which we can discuss at interview.
  • 39 hours a week, working Monday to Friday. Ordinarily, shifts will start at 06:00am in the morning until 14:30pm – this is to allow you to complete tasks on the shopfloor prior to customers coming in. Great if you are an early riser!
  • This role will include occasional night shifts and weekend working in line with the IKEA commercial calendar.

What you’ll need to have
  • Qualification in Carpentry NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Wood Occupations/Site Carpentry is essential, or an equivalent qualification (such as an HND or NVQ in Carpentry).
  • Previous carpentry experience gained in a commercial or retail environment, ideally retail fit‑out or from exhibition installations, with good attention to detail.
  • You are excited about home furnishings, design and how people live, and have the ability to generate new ideas to inspire our customers.
  • Proven ability to prioritise and organise your workload in order to make the most efficient use of available time and meet agreed goals and deadlines.
  • Clear communication with the ability to explain concepts verbally and with visual interpretation.
  • Due to Health and Safety, you must be 18 years old or over for this role.
What you’ll be doing day to day
  • Following work briefs agreed with colleagues to implement all store media, such as wall constructions, podiums, fixtures, floor laying, painting and the building of complex furniture installations.
  • Planning and ordering materials and resources, ensuring accurate costs are sought and agreed in order to maximise efficiency and minimise costs.
  • Working with your colleagues to make sure the store is always in excellent shape to inspire our customers.
  • Focus on key tasks to meet the needs and expectations of store visitors and minimise disruption when working on the shop floor
  • Be conscious of the importance of safety at all times while working on the shop floor and take fast action when safety is compromised.
