Job summary

Birchwood School in Cardiff is seeking a dedicated Site Caretaker to maintain a welcoming, safe environment for pupils and staff.

You will perform daily repairs, safety checks, grounds maintenance, and support site security and vehicle duties, with training provided where needed.

Qualifications

• GCSEs/NVQs/SVQs (or equivalent) required or preferred.
• Experience with basic repairs, maintenance, or caretaking.
• Clear communication and good organisation.
• Ability to work independently and stay calm under pressure.
• Confidence travelling locally using school vehicles.

Responsibilities

• General Maintenance: daily repairs, planned maintenance, safety checks, inspect heating/lighting/alarm systems, assist with cleaning as needed.
• Grounds & Presentation: gardening, landscaping, painting, improving site appearance, manage tools and materials.
• Site Security: open/close each day, regular security checks, supervise when required, coordinate with contractors.

What You’ll Be Doing

As our Site Caretaker, you will play a key role in keeping Birchwood School running smoothly. Your days will be varied, active, and essential to ensuring our pupils and staff have a safe and welcoming place to learn.

Your Responsibilities Will Include

General Maintenance

• Carrying out daily repairs and planned maintenance
• Completing essential health and safety checks
• Inspecting heating, lighting, and alarm systems
• Supporting cleaning tasks when needed

Grounds & Presentation

• Gardening, landscaping, and keeping outdoor spaces tidy
• Painting, decorating, and improving site appearance
• Managing tools, equipment, and materials

Site Security

• Opening and closing the school each day
• Performing regular security checks
• Supporting traffic flow on site
• Working with contractors, overseeing site inductions, and supervising when required

Vehicle Support

• Carrying out basic checks and cleaning of school vehicles

What You Bring

We’re looking for someone practical, reliable, and confident in a busy school setting. Ideally, you’ll have:

• GCSEs/NVQs/SVQs (or equivalent)
• Experience with basic repairs, maintenance, or caretaking
• Clear communication and great organisation
• The ability to work independently and stay calm under pressure
• A basic understanding of health and safety (training available)
• Confidence travelling locally using school vehicles

Qualifications in construction, engineering, or IOSH are an advantage but not a requirement.
