Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated phlebotomist to join the team in Cancer Care at University Hospitals Southampton. Phlebotomists in Cancer Care support patients by providing the essential care involving placing cannulas for treatments, and taking blood tests. Diagnostics, treatment plans, research and so much more depend on these results and skills and so our phlebotomy team are integral to the service.Our phlebotomy team rotate to ensure both our wards and our Cancer Care Clinics are covered and the essential bloods are taken therefore for both our inpatients and outpatients.Wards include C2, C4, C6, TYA, D12 and Macmillan Acute Oncology Service.Our outpatient service is based on D level East Wing where patients attending various different clinics will be booked for blood tests before or after being seen by their specialists.The phlebotomy service may also support and is also part of C7, the haematology day unitOur goal is to provide all our patients who are undergoing cancer diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care with gold standard support and compassion, and hope to grow our wonderful team phlebotomists who pay a key role in providing this care.

Job responsibilities

Receive all patients in a calm, courteous and reassuring manner and uphold the confidentiality, dignity and best customer care practice for all patients/clients at all times.

Advise and support patients / carers, within the scope of knowledge and role, whilst maintaining confidentiality. This includes using tact, reassurance and persuasive skills to overcome anxiety and barriers to understanding such as those who are non-English speaking, and those with learning disabilities.

Identify the correct patient against the blood request, collect and accurately label blood samples from all patients according to local policies.

Ensure full explanation is given to patient prior to performing the task.

Provide assistance to all patients experiencing difficulties during and following procedure (e.g. those patients feeling dizzy, sick or faint).

Escalate to the Nurse in Charge /Team Leader if unable to bleed any patients.

Visit wards and outpatient areas regarding provision of phlebotomy and cannulation services as required, liaising with ward staff accordingly.

Prioritise own work according to fasting/urgent requests to ensure a prompt service and to deliver all samples to laboratory reception within an appropriate time frame.

Be familiar with all standard venesection and cannulation procedures, especially in relation to the control of infection (e.g. needle stick injury, disposal of sharps, blood borne viruses, using disposable gloves and tourniquets).

Ensure compliance with all policies and regulations, including but not limited to, infection control and hand hygiene policy, at all times.

Take responsibility for own personal development and education, as well as maintaining personal development plans, mandatory competencies and skills.

Be able to support both the Cancer Care Ward demands and Cancer Care clinics, and be flexible between workloads.

Maintain adequate stocks of consumables and equipment in the work area, take delivery of stores and identify shortages of any items to the Manager / Deputy.

Be responsible for the cleaning of individual trolleys prior to procedures and cleaning of the clinical area/equipment (e.g. work tops, chairs and patient trolley).

Participate in collection of data regarding number of bleeds/attendance of patients for audit purposes as required.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience
  • Willingness to learn new skills. Ability to work as part of a team but also having the ability to work on their own
  • Ability to cope with work pressures when working in high care areas when having difficulty in collecting blood sample from patients
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary environment
  • Ability to complete all training packages including Venesection and cannulation course and ANTT course within 2 months.Basic Life Support training
  • Experience in providing healthcare
  • Experience preferred but not essential, as full in house training given
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary environmentNVQ3, or willing to undertake NVQ training
  • Basic Life Support training
  • Previous clinical experience in a hospital setting
  • Experience in Venesection in an acute setting
  • Experience in hospital IT systems
