Job summary

The University of Sheffield is seeking an IT Support Assistant to deliver professional IT support to students and staff across the university. You will diagnose and resolve moderate to complex issues with minimal supervision, across hardware, software and network problems, while contributing to continuous service improvement.

Qualifications

  • A-Level, BTEC, or equivalent IT-related qualification or 1–2 years IT support experience
  • Knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems (Windows/macOS) and standard software
  • Experience troubleshooting and resolving common technical issues with hardware, software, and network connectivity
  • Understanding of IT security principles and data protection requirements
  • Experience using helpdesk/ticket systems to track issues
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication skills for users with varying tech levels
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and systems
  • Technical certifications such as CompTIA A+, Microsoft, or Apple certification (assessed at application/interview)

Responsibilities

  • Provide responsive IT support to students, staff and academics, resolving common issues and escalating complex problems
  • Support the IT service desk and TechBar across central and faculty locations with in-person assistance
  • Process and manage IT tickets using TOPdesk with accurate documentation and updates
  • Troubleshoot Windows and macOS devices, peripherals, software, and network connectivity
  • Assist users with university systems including email, VPN, Wi‑Fi, printing and learning platforms
  • Set up and configure equipment including computers, monitors, printers, and peripherals
  • Maintain and contribute to IT knowledge bases and self-help resources
  • Participate in IT induction sessions for new staff and students
  • Support deployment of IT equipment for university events and term starts
  • Develop understanding of faculty IT requirements to tailor support
  • Gather user feedback to improve IT services and address recurring issues
  • Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit
