Job description

Are you an experienced Buyer looking for your next opportunity within the construction, civil engineering or infrastructure sector?

We’re working with a leading UK infrastructure and civil engineering business delivering major projects across the water, transport, energy and built environment sectors. Due to continued activity across its projects, the business is looking to appoint a Buyer to support its procurement operations and ensure the timely, cost-effective supply of materials, services and plant equipment.

This is an excellent opportunity to join an established organisation with a strong pipeline of secured work, a collaborative culture and genuine opportunities for career progression.

The Role

As Buyer, you’ll work closely with project teams, regional support functions and the wider procurement department to deliver an effective, commercially focused purchasing service. You’ll be responsible for sourcing materials and services, negotiating with suppliers and ensuring project requirements are met in line with programme, budget, quality and compliance expectations.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Procuring construction materials, plant, equipment and associated services across a range of infrastructure projects.

  • Sourcing and evaluating suppliers, reviewing quotations and negotiating competitive prices and delivery arrangements.

  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers, site teams and internal stakeholders.

  • Supporting project delivery by ensuring materials and services are available when required, without compromising quality or safety.

  • Monitoring costs, budgets and commercial performance to achieve best value.

  • Identifying market developments, supply chain opportunities and potential efficiencies.

  • Maintaining accurate purchase orders, procurement records and supplier information.

  • Producing reports, analysing procurement data and monitoring KPIs.

  • Ensuring all purchasing activity complies with company procedures, financial controls and contractual requirements.

  • Supporting the development of junior procurement colleagues where required.

About You

We’re keen to hear from Buyers or procurement professionals with experience in construction, civil engineering, infrastructure or engineering-led environments.

You’ll ideally bring:

  • Experience in a similar purchasing or buying role, ideally within water, rail, construction or infrastructure.

  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to develop effective, long-term supplier relationships.

  • Commercial awareness, including cost control, budget monitoring and value-for-money purchasing.

  • Confident communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with site teams, suppliers and stakeholders.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent attention to detail, particularly around purchase orders, contractual requirements and procurement procedures.

  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and purchasing systems.

  • The ability to use your initiative while contributing positively to a wider team.

A CIPS qualification, or working towards one, would be advantageous. A relevant degree or equivalent experience and a full UK driving licence would also be beneficial.

What's on Offer?

You’ll be joining a well-established business with long-term secured work across major UK infrastructure projects and a commitment to developing its people.

The package includes:

  • Competitive salary.

  • Company pension, life assurance & private medical cover.

  • 25 days’ annual leave, plus eight public bank holidays and additional loyalty days.

  • Flexible benefits through salary sacrifice.

  • Company vehicle, car allowance or green car scheme, depending on the position.

  • Regular appraisals and opportunities for career progression.

Why Apply?

This is an opportunity to develop your procurement career within a supportive, people-focused organisation delivering essential infrastructure across the UK. With a strong pipeline of work, a collaborative supply chain and opportunities to broaden your project experience, it offers the chance to make a tangible contribution to major construction and engineering schemes.
