Role Specific Responsibilities: Business Development and Marketing Manager

Overview

This Group-level role combines relationship-led business development, practical marketing delivery and client care across the regional water businesses. Working alongside the Head of Developer Services and technical colleagues, the successful candidate will help open doors, develop relationships and turn established leads into productive conversations. The technical team provides specialist expertise; this role complements it through proactive introductions, communication and consistent follow-up.

Role Specific Tasks

The Business Development and Marketing Manager will deliver the established marketing plan and support client relationships across the Group. Core responsibilities include:

  • Deliver the agreed marketing plan through targeted letters, LinkedIn activity, telephone calls and timely follow-up.
  • Progress existing leads, make introductions and arrange meetings with housebuilders, developers and referral contacts.
  • Attend client meetings alongside technical colleagues, introducing the business and helping develop trusted relationships.
  • Maintain regular contact with prospective and existing clients, ensuring enquiries, actions and commitments are followed through.
  • Act as a second point of contact for developer clients, providing continuity and helping the Group understand relationship progress.
  • Coordinate with regional teams to ensure clients receive consistent communication, attention and support.
  • Attend relevant industry events, networking opportunities and appropriate client hospitality engagements.
  • Maintain clear, accurate records of contacts, activity, next steps and relationship status.
  • Identify unanswered queries, stalled opportunities and relationships needing attention, escalating them to relevant colleagues.
  • Work collaboratively with the Head of Developer Services and technical specialists, involving them when technical input is required.

The responsibilities outlined are representative of the principal duties associated with the role. All colleagues are expected to adopt a flexible approach, undertaking additional duties commensurate with the role and contributing to the wider success of the business where required.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are looking for an approachable, professional and engaging individual who enjoys meeting people, building trust and maintaining relationships. The successful candidate will combine energy and commercial ambition with reliable organisation and consistent follow-through. Previous sector experience or a formal business development title is not essential.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to make clients comfortable and show genuine interest in their businesses.
  • Confidence initiating conversations, making calls, approaching new contacts and arranging meetings.
  • A proactive, persistent but considered approach to developing opportunities without being pushy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, professional judgement and a strong sense of client care.
  • Reliable organisation, follow-up and record-keeping across multiple leads and relationships.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with technical colleagues and regional teams, knowing when to involve specialists.
  • Willingness to learn the Group's services and deliver its established marketing approach.
  • Readiness to travel for meetings and events, including occasional overnight stays and agreed commitments outside standard office hours.
  • Commercial motivation, initiative and enthusiasm for progression and performance-related earnings.
Additional Desirable Attributes

Experience in marketing, business development, account management or client relationships within water, utilities, infrastructure, housebuilding, property or the wider built environment would be valuable. Existing relevant contacts are an advantage. Strong transferable experience from estate agency, lettings, recruitment or other business-to-business sales roles is also welcomed.
