Job Description:

Mechanical Services Engineer – Estates and Facilities

Location: The University of Manchester
Department: Directorate of Estates and Facilities
Working Pattern: Full-time, Onsite

Purpose of the Role

To support the Estates and Facilities team in delivering mechanical building services across the University’s estate, including academic, research, residential, and heritage buildings. Responsibilities include managing projects from inception to completion, ensuring compliance with regulations and standards, and contributing to safe, efficient, and sustainable environments for students, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Lead and support the design, specification, and delivery of mechanical services projects, including HVAC, water systems, and infrastructure.
  2. Conduct site surveys, feasibility studies, and technical assessments, minimizing disruption to University operations.
  3. Manage and coordinate contractors and consultants, ensuring timely delivery and compliance with safety and quality standards.
  4. Provide technical advice and mentorship to junior staff, fostering continuous improvement.
  5. Monitor project progress, budgets, and KPIs, and report on variances with corrective actions.
  6. Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective communication and project alignment.
  7. Support planned preventative maintenance and reactive works in accordance with legislation and policies.
  8. Utilize CAFM systems and Microsoft Office tools for documentation, scheduling, and reporting.
  9. Assist in preparing tenders, PQQs, and business development materials in collaboration with the Operations Manager.

Qualifications and Experience

  1. Time-served Mechanical/Building Services Engineer with ONC/HNC or higher in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services.
  2. IOSH Working Safely or equivalent health and safety training.
  3. Proven experience in mechanical design and project delivery within a complex environment, preferably in higher education, healthcare, or public sector.
  4. Experience managing contractors and working in multidisciplinary teams.

Skills and Attributes

  1. Strong project management and coordination skills.
  2. Proficient in AutoCAD, NBS, Microsoft Office Suite; CAFM systems experience is advantageous.
  3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for stakeholder engagement.
  4. Organized, proactive, and committed to high-quality outcomes.
