Job summary

Girling Jones Ltd in Exeter is seeking a Building Services Engineer to take technical responsibility for M&E across around 100 properties in Devon and Somerset. You will lead maintenance, statutory compliance, and improvement projects, and manage contractors within a diverse public-sector estate.

You’ll have strong M&E knowledge, contractor management experience, and the ability to shape energy efficiency and investment strategies while delivering projects from concept to completion.

Qualifications

• Strong Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services background.
• Experience in property maintenance or multi-site estates.
• Understanding of M&E systems and statutory compliance.
• Ability to own projects and provide practical technical advice.

Responsibilities

We're recruiting for an established public-sector organisation looking for an experienced Building Services Engineer to take technical responsibility for M&E services across a diverse estate of approximately 100 properties throughout Devon and Somerset. From operational facilities and workshops to training centres and offices, this is a genuinely varied portfolio offering everything from planned maintenance and statutory compliance through to major M&E upgrades and improvement projects.

The Role

Working alongside the Estates team, you'll become the go-to technical specialist for Mechanical & Electrical building services.

You’ll be responsible for:

• Managing M&E maintenance, statutory compliance and improvement programmes.
• Undertaking building inspections, condition surveys and asset assessments.
• Delivering M&E projects from specification through to completion.
• Managing specialist contractors, consultants and maintenance providers.
• Overseeing budgets, procurement, quality and Health & Safety.
• Identifying opportunities to improve energy efficiency and modernise building systems.

About You

We're looking for someone with a strong Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services engineering background, ideally with experience across property maintenance, facilities management or multi-site estates.

You’ll understand M&E systems, statutory compliance and contractor management, with the confidence to take ownership of projects and provide practical technical advice.

A relevant engineering qualification would be advantageous, although solid industry experience is equally important.
