About Kensa
The UK’s heating system is outdated, costing both people and the planet too much. At Kensa, we’ve been leading the charge since 1999, manufacturing and installing affordable, green heating solutions with minimal impact on the electricity grid. We’re responsible for over half the ground source heat pumps installed in the UK. Our networked heat pumps are the cheapest, cleanest way to heat and cool millions of homes and businesses, and even entire towns. By 2040, up to 8,000 homes a week could be connecting to these heat networks, eliminating 17Mt of CO2 a year, equivalent to that of over half of all UK flights. In leading the networked heat pump sector, Kensa will expand to install 50,000 heat pumps a year and employ 1,500. It’s time to leave high bills and emissions behind.
We’re making heating better - for people, for the planet, and for the future.
Why join Kensa?
- Impact: Be part of a mission-driven team dedicated to sustainable and affordable heating solutions.
- Growth: Significant career advancement opportunities in an expanding sector.
- Innovation: Engage in meaningful projects that contribute directly to the UK’s net-zero carbon targets.
- Values-driven: Work in a supportive, inclusive environment where integrity, respect, and teamwork are valued.
Ready to be at the forefront of the UK’s journey to net zero?
About The Role
We are seeking a proactive and technically skilled Design Engineer with experience in mechanical and electrical building services design. Reporting to our Non-Domestic Design Lead, you will play a critical role in the design and implementation of medium to large-scale GSHP installations, both new-build and retrofit, across sectors such as commercial, educational, healthcare, and complex residential developments.
Your Key Responsibilities
- System Design & Calculation: Perform detailed calculations to size heating and cooling systems, including heat pumps, vessels, emitters, pumps, and pipework.
- Survey Management & Data Collection: Lead and coordinate surveys to collect critical data on building structure, utilities, and existing systems. Manage communication with subcontractors and review architectural plans to gather insights for custom GHSP designs.
- Design Documentation & Technical Reporting: Prepare detailed documentation and technical reports, covering system specifications, energy modeling results, and design decisions. Prepare and review M&E designs, ensuring all designs align with Kensa’s high standards and client requirements.
- Project Management: Develop and manage design project schedules using tools such as Microsoft Project to ensure timelines are met. Oversee essential surveys (e.g. asbestos, mechanical, electrical) to gather construction information and address specific project requirements.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure all designs meet CDM 2015 regulations and safety standards, proactively maintaining Health & Safety compliance.
- Support Sales & Estimation Teams: Work closely with sales and estimating teams, offering technical guidance and reviewing design proposals to ensure designs meet client expectations and budgets.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay up-to-date on industry trends and Kensa products, contributing ideas to enhance systems and practices.
About You
- Relevant degree qualification and previous experience in mechanical building services.
- Sound understanding of engineering principles.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems and GSHP technologies, with the ability to apply this practically in designs.
- Ability to review, appraise, and comment on detailed M&E specifications and drawings.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and MS Office (including MS Project).
- Proven ability to work independently, with minimal oversight, to deliver functional designs.
- Strong communication skills to effectively liaise with clients and ensure high-quality project deliverables.
- Knowledge of building physics and experience with relevant software such as Revit or IES would be desirable.
- A working knowledge of electrical and controls for building services would be desirable.
Key Behaviours We Are Looking For
- Customer-focused: Prioritise quality and client satisfaction in every project.
- Integrity & Responsibility: Demonstrate accountability and uphold safety and wellbeing standards.
- Innovation & Growth: Drive positive change through continuous learning, teamwork, and responsible decision-making.
How will Kensa support you?
- We encourage and support development, including internal and external courses, learning, study, and software, all bespoke to you.
- Wellbeing: free 24/7 access to an independent and confidential Employee Assistance Programme for you and your immediate family.
- 25 days holiday increasing to 30 days (plus bank holidays) for 5+ years’ service.
- Private Health Insurance is available after one year of service.
- Automatic enrolment in our company pension scheme.
- Cycle to Work Scheme to help lower your carbon footprint whilst boosting endorphins and your health.
- Team Culture: Regular Kensa events and activities for staff and families, encouraging us to celebrate, connect, and enjoy work together.
