Job summary

West Northants Council is seeking a Building Control Officer to inspect sites, assess building plans, and supervise works to ensure compliance with Building Regulations and related laws. You will advise clients, developers and contractors to facilitate safe, compliant projects across the Towcester area.

The role requires a registered Building Inspector (Class 2A) and strong communication; familiarity with the DEF system is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Must be a registered Building Inspector with the Building Safety Regulator – Minimum Class 2A.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Methodical with strong attention to detail during assessments and inspections.
  • Familiarity with the internal computer administration system (DEF) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a varied portfolio of building regulation applications suitable to your class registration.
  • Review plans, carry out site inspections and provide professional guidance to architects, developers, contractors and the public.
  • Oversee projects from application to completion, including breaches of regulations and related enforcement where needed.
  • Contribute to protecting public safety and assist in assessments relating to demolitions and unsafe structures.

About The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Building Control team for a new Building Control Officer.

In this varied and rewarding role, you will undertake site inspections, assess and approve building plans, and supervise building works to ensure compliance with Building Regulations and associated legislation. You will provide professional advice and guidance to customers, developers, architects, and contractors, helping to facilitate successful project delivery while maintaining public safety.

What will you be doing?

In this role, you will manage a varied portfolio of building regulation applications appropriate to your level of Class 2 registration, ensuring that building projects comply with Building Regulations and associated legislation through both technical assessment and on-site inspection.

You will oversee allocated projects from application through to completion, reviewing plans, carrying out site inspections and providing professional advice to architects, developers, contractors and members of the public.

The role also involves investigating and resolving breaches of Building Regulations and related legislation, supporting enforcement activities where necessary and representing the Council in legal proceedings when required. In addition, you will assist in the assessment of dangerous, dilapidated and unsafe structures, support statutory responsibilities relating to building demolitions and contribute to protecting public safety across the area.

About You

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic individual to work within our recently reorganised Building Control team.

You will need to be methodical, have an attention to detail and be an excellent communicator, both verbal and written.

An in depth knowledge of the internal computer administration system (DEF) is preferred.

You must be a registered Building Inspector with the Building Safety Regulator - Minimum Class 2A.
