Job summary

AtkinsRéalis in Birmingham seeks an Engineer in Bridges and Civils to shape transportation projects across the UK and Ireland, delivering high-quality civil and structural designs for new builds, renewals, maintenance and assessments.

You will collaborate with national and international design teams, apply Eurocodes and rail standards, use LUSAS/MIDAS/Autodesk software, and support bids while mentoring junior staff in a hybrid, flexible working culture.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering required.
• Near Chartered/Chartered status with ICE or IStructE.
• Experience with Network Rail, National Highways or local authorities.
• Knowledge of Eurocodes, DMRB, MCHW and Network Rail standards.
• Experience in bridge design, maintenance or railway projects.

Responsibilities

• Develop high-quality civil and structural designs for new construction, renewals, maintenance and assessments.
• Collaborate with national and international design teams to create sustainable impacts.
• Apply analytical skills to evaluate options and provide engineering judgement.
• Produce design documentation: sketches, drawings, 3D BIM, analyses, calculations, reports and specifications.
• Mentor junior staff and support bids and tenders.

As an Engineer in our Bridges and Civils team within our Transportation business, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of transportation. We work on a diverse range of significant and challenging projects across the UK and Ireland, including Midlands Rail Hub, East West Rail, Lower Thames Crossing and a variety of National Highways Schemes. The team also supports non‑transportation civil engineering and structures projects throughout the UK and internationally such as the Water Market or Nuclear schemes such as Rolls Royce Small Modular Reactor programme. Locally in the Midlands we deliver a range of local authority projects for councils such as Warwickshire, Herefordshire, Solihull, Coventry and Birmingham. You'll take pride in creating high‑quality civil and structural designs for new builds, renewals, maintenance, and assessments. Your role

• Take pride in developing high-quality civil and structural designs for new construction, renewals, maintenance, and assessments.
• Collaborate with both national and international design teams, utilizing your experience to create positive, sustainable impacts on society and the environment.
• Use analytical skills to derive potential solutions to engineering problems and engineering judgement to appraise different options and recommend the most suitable option.
• Undertake technical work independently, including the production of high quality design documentation including sketches, drawings, 3D BIM deliverables, analysis models, calculations, reports and specifications.
• Provide guidance and support for more junior members of staff.
• Support on bids, tenders and winning work.
• Sound interpersonal skills and ability to converse with a wide range of colleagues across a number of engineering disciplines.

About you

• A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
• Near Chartered/Chartered status and membership of the ICE or IStructE .
• Experience of working on projects with key clients such as Network Rail, National Highways or local authorities as well as major Contractors and Developers.
• Good understanding of relevant design standards (e.g. Eurocodes, DMRB, MCHW and Network Rail standards).
• Practical knowledge and experience of bridge design, maintenance and assessment or of delivering Railway Civil Engineering and Stations projects.
• Experience of structural analysis software packages such as LUSAS, MIDAS and Autodesk Structural Bridge Design. We are also interested in canidates with experience of ABAQUS, ANSYS or NASTRAN.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to converse with a wide range of clients, stakeholders and colleagues across a number of engineering disciplines.
