Job summary

The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association is seeking a proactive Breeding Dog Wellbeing Technician at our National Breeding Centre. You will oversee the care, health and welfare of breeding dogs and puppies, applying animal welfare standards and positive handling techniques in a kennel environment.

This full-time on-site role is 35 hours per week on a rota basis, including weekends and bank holidays. You will coach colleagues and volunteers, monitor wellbeing, identify health issues, and support

Qualifications

• A qualification in animal care, training/behaviour, or equivalent relevant work-based experience.
• Able to undertake physical demands of the role, including handling puppies in the nest and placing puppies in and out of vehicles and large dogs over 24kgs.
• Able to meet the travel requirements of the role. In the absence of a full valid UK Driving License, you will be expected to demonstrate how you will fulfil this aspect of the role via alternative means.
• Experience of working in a kennel environment, paid employment or voluntary.
• Knowledge of core principles of animal care and behaviour.
• Computer literate, with proficient Microsoft Office skills and ability to effectively use databases.

Responsibilities

• Managing the care of a group of dogs in a dog accommodation area, ensuring their routine husbandry needs are met.
• Monitor the mental & physical wellbeing of dogs taking steps to ensure that their wellbeing is maximised.
• Identify health concerns, making appropriate decisions, and escalating in a timely manner.
• Coach and mentor colleagues and volunteers, delivering expert knowledge in dog breeding and Dog Wellbeing training programmes.

As a Breeding Dog Wellbeing Technician at Guide Dogs, you’ll play a crucial role in ensuring the specialist care, health, and wellbeing of breeding dogs and puppies at our Guide Dogs National Centre. The Breeding Dog Wellbeing Technician will be an expert in canine wellbeing and husbandry, with strong knowledge of dog health, behaviour, welfare standards and positive handling techniques. Our Breeding Dog Wellbeing Technicians play a huge part in ensuring everything we do enables us to deliver on our purpose and exceed expectations.

This role will be based on site at our National Breeding Centre. You’ll be working 35 hours per week, on a rota basis including working every other weekend, bank holidays, evenings and overnight duties

You’ll have a person-centred, expert and optimistic approach to your work, grounded in a strong understanding of animal wellbeing and dog care principles. You’ll enjoy working in a kennel and dog accommodation environment, supporting colleagues and volunteers, with a dedicated focus on dog health, wellbeing, behaviour and positive handling techniques, whilst being committed to delivering the highest standards of care. You’ll act with integrity and honesty in everything you do.
