Job summary

NHS Blood and Transplant’s transport operation is seeking a full-time driver for a 12-month fixed-term contract. The role involves collecting, transporting and delivering blood and related products between sites and customers, with daily vehicle checks and logging movements on handheld devices.

You must hold a valid UK B licence, be prepared to work a 24/7 rota including nights and bank holidays, and may be trained to support urgent blue light deliveries.

Qualifications

• Previous vocational driving experience or evidence of driving proficiency
• Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance checks
• Able to meet NHSBT minimum driving standards, assessed at interview
• Able to use IT such as digital hand-held devices, Microsoft Office or similar packages
• Good geographical knowledge of the local area and road network

Responsibilities

• Collect, transport and deliver blood, related products and equipment between sites and customers
• Drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonne, or light goods vehicles up to 3.5 tonne
• Keep vehicles secure and roadworthy and complete daily checks
• Carry out vehicle security checks and basic maintenance, reporting defects promptly
• Track work and keep accurate electronic and paper records using hand-held devices
• Load and unload products and equipment, assemble and dismantle kit, and move items up to 20kg
• Support urgent blue light deliveries when required, with full training provided
• Give colleagues, donors, hospital staff and the public a positive customer experience
• Work rostered 24/7 shifts including variable hours, evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays
