You will be working as part of a scientific and clinical team, including doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. The role you perform will directly contribute to saving and improving patients' lives.
There are many opportunities for career progression within NHSBT. With experience and training, you may progress to managing a section of the laboratory, or to a lead scientist responsible for the entire laboratory service. You may also specialise in areas vital to modern diagnostic services, such as Quality Control, training and education, or research and development.

The National Bacteriology Laboratory plays a leading role in transfusion and transplantation microbiology, both nationally and internationally, with close links to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), universities, and international biomedical companies.
You will be required to perform, analyze, record, and interpret a wide range of specialist and complex bacteriological investigations related to blood and tissue products.
You will be responsible for supporting and training new and less experienced staff.
You will need to handle blood and tissue samples and operate various laboratory analyzers and equipment.
You will also be expected to address queries from other departments, medical staff, or visitors, providing specialist bacteriological advice to a range of service users.
Some Saturday work will be required on a rotational basis.
