Job summary

Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital invites applications for a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion department of the Blood Sciences Laboratory, part of the Eastern Pathology Alliance.

The role centers on automated and specialist blood testing, including full blood counts, coagulation work, haemoglobinopathy screening and crossmatching for transfusion. Reporting results and maintaining analysers are key duties, with opportunities to train staff and students.

Qualifications

• BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
• HCPC registration is required.
• Ability to work effectively within a complex multidisciplinary team.
• Good problem-solving and data interpretation skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform haematology and coagulation analyses, including FBC, specialist coagulation tests and haemoglobinopathy screening.
• Carry out blood grouping and crossmatching for transfusion.
• Input, validate, report and amend patient data and results.
• Prepare samples and maintain complex analytical equipment, assessing fitness for clinical use.
• Manage daily workload to meet turnaround times.
• Explain complex test information to managers, clinicians and patients.
• Answer enquiries about results from pathology users and patients.
• Assist in education and training of staff and students.
• Maintain competence through CPD, courses and training.
• Work as part of a busy team and uphold PRIDE values.
