Job summary

NHS Blood and Transplant seeks a Biomedical Scientist (BMS) to work in Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI). You will perform diagnostic tests, interpret results and support transfusion and transplantation services in a specialist lab setting.

You will maintain equipment, follow CPA/GMP/UKBTS/BCSH guidelines and participate in CPD. The role requires shift work including weekends/bank holidays and on-call rotas as part of the department’s roster.

Qualifications

• HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist is required.
• CPA, GMP, UKBTS and BCSH guidelines knowledge.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development (CPD).

Job Summary

As a Biomedical Scientist in Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI), you’ll use your scientific expertise to help deliver safe and effective diagnostic and transfusion services that directly support patients across the UK. Working in a specialist laboratory environment, you’ll perform and interpret a wide range of tests, operate advanced laboratory equipment, and contribute to the delivery of blood and tissue products. You’ll play an important role in maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety, while working alongside experienced colleagues in a collaborative and supportive team. Main duties of the job

• Use specialist laboratory techniques and technology to perform diagnostic testing that supports the safe treatment of patients.
• Interpret test results accurately and make evidence‑based decisions to help maintain the highest standards of patient and product safety.
• Communicate scientific and technical information clearly with colleagues, healthcare professionals and partner laboratories.
• Work with a range of specialist equipment, carrying out routine maintenance, calibration and quality checks to ensure reliable performance.
• Contribute to services that support patients with complex transfusion and transplantation needs through specialist testing and analysis.
• Help maintain quality standards by following laboratory procedures, regulatory requirements and good manufacturing practice.
• Support continuous improvement by contributing to service developments, updating procedures and helping resolve quality incidents.
• Share your knowledge by supporting the training and development of colleagues, trainees and support staff.
• Build your expertise through continuing professional development and opportunities to learn across specialist laboratory areas
• Being able to work variable hours and days, weekends and bank holidays as per the roster within the department (unless otherwise rostered within the shift agreement) with appropriate notice, depending on specialty.

You will be required to participate in the shift rota and on call rotas and to provide cover during operational emergencies.

About You

Experience and Knowledge

• Broad understanding of the NHSBT including its functions/departments and the wider healthcare community.
• In depth knowledge and understanding of the Biomedical Scientist role within NHSBT.
• Experienced in the use of a range of laboratory equipment.
• Broad Knowledge of transfusion and transplantation science.
• Competent in a range of manual scientific techniques.
• Experience of working with information technology using Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams and PowerPoint).

Qualifications and Training

• Good understanding of Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), UK Blood Transfusion Service (UKBTS) and British Committee for Standards in Haematology (BCSH) guidelines.
• Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist (which must be maintained).
• Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).
