Job summary

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist (Band 5) for the Microbiology department. The post includes day-to-day sample processing and analytical investigations, with weekend working and on‑call duties as part of a modern laboratory (Derbyshire Pathology) serving Royal Derby Hospital and other sites.

The role requires HCPC registration with specialist Microbiology knowledge, including bacteriology, parasitology and mycology,

Qualifications

  • HCPC registration and eligible to practice as Biomedical Scientist.
  • Experience in Microbiology with emphasis on clinical investigations.
  • Experience in Parasitology and Mycology.
  • Experience with on-call duties and weekend work.
  • Familiarity with ISO 15189 and lab safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake day‑to‑day sample processing and analytical investigations in Microbiology to required timeliness and quality.
  • Supervise MLAs within the work area.
  • Engage in staff training and development.
  • Participate in on‑call and weekend duties.

Job overview

This band 5 position is for HCPC registered candidates and is not suitable for trainees or those candidates requiring certificates of sponsorship.

At University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust patients are at the centre of all we do.

Derbyshire Pathology provides pathology services for Royal Derby Hospital, Chesterfield Royal Hospital and Queen's Hospital, Burton (since October 2021) and is hosted by University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation.

We are part of a modern laboratory within Derbyshire Pathology, a joint venture for Derby, Burton and Chesterfield so this post may require cross site working.

If you are HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist and would relish a new challenge, then we would love to hear from you. This is an exciting time to become part of a diverse team. The laboratory is covered 24 hours every day and the successful candidate would be require to work weekends on rotational basis and participate in the on-call rota.

We’re looking for a passionate and committed individual who shares our values and want to invest in continuously to improve and transform our services.

Main duties of the job

To undertake the day to day sample processing and analytical clinical investigations for Microbiology to the agreed standard of timeliness and quality. Supervise MLAs within their work area.

To engage in training of staff. To fully participate in on-call and weekend duties. Familiarisation and understanding of ISO 15189 standards, Health & Safety requirements; audit and training/education techniques is essential.

Experience of utilising transformation methodologies to drive change and improve service delivery is also desirable. Proactive individuals, with drive and dedication will excel in this post.
