Job summary

Boehringer Ingelheim is seeking an ML Engineer to join the AI Systems team in London, contributing to the frontier of biomedical AI. You will translate validated research prototypes into production-ready implementations with a focus on training, efficiency, scalability and production-readiness.

You will collaborate with AI scientists and more experienced ML engineers to deliver robust model artefacts, benchmarks and scalable pipelines while ensuring the integrity of biology as models move from

Qualifications

• Postgraduate degree in ML or related field required; PhD preferred.
• Hands-on experience with deep learning and foundation model implementations such as transformers, pre-training and fine-tuning.
• Experience moving research prototypes to production-quality artifacts.
• Experience collaborating with researchers during the implementation process.
• Proficiency in Python and PyTorch.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals: clean, tested, documented code; version control.
• Experience with distributed training frameworks such as PyTorch Distributed, DeepSpeed, FSDP or Ray Train.
• Exposure to model optimisation techniques for inference (quantisation, distillation, pruning).

Responsibilities

• Contribute engineering perspectives to architectural design discussions for scalable foundation models.
• Implement training code, data loaders, tokenisers, inference logic and fine-tuning interfaces.
• Translate validated prototypes into production-ready model artefacts with benchmarking.
• Optimize models and inference pipelines for latency without sacrificing performance.
• Write clean, well-tested code and follow team standards.
• Support handovers to MLOps with documentation on capabilities and failure modes.
• Stay current with advances in ML engineering and biomedical AI tooling.
