Position Description
QIAGEN Manchester is a world leading centre for molecular diagnostic applications, expanding and enhancing the delivery of life-improving diagnostic systems for existing and emerging medical needs, with a focus on companion diagnostics and personalized healthcare in infectious disease and oncology. At our custom built, state-of-the-art facility close to Manchester city centre we are located next to major hospital and university sites, reinforcing our connections with the healthcare sector and our commitment to scientific innovation. We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Bioinformatics IT Specialist to join our dynamic team and contribute to cutting-edge projects in bioinformatics and computational biology within the Molecular Assay Development team working alongside a team of highly experienced Bioinformaticians from around the world. The role requires a blend of bioinformatics expertise and advanced IT skills to support our research and development initiatives.
Key responsibilities:
- Development and documentation of bioinformatics tools for the improvement of processes in support of molecular assay development.
- Manage and analyze small- and large-scale genomic, transcriptomics, or other biological datasets.
- Implement and optimize algorithms for data processing and analysis; develop and maintain databases and web-based tools for data storage and retrieval.
- Support the planning and coordination of studies for themselves and small teams including writing protocols and reviewing and approving documents
- Provide IT support for bioinformatics infrastructure, including servers, storage systems, and cloud computing environments.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to bioinformatics tools and systems.
- Become a knowledge expert for Bioinformatic workflows; coaching and mentoring colleagues to ensure development of a learning environment.
- Ensure adherence to design control procedures and to the required quality and regulatory standards.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Programming skills in languages such as Python, R, or Perl.
- Familiarity with version control systems (e.g. Git).
- Experience in the analysis of genomics data (NGS and/or PCR) and knowledge of human genetics, genomics and/or infectious disease.
- Knowledge of core bioinformatics tools and relevant bioinformatics databases (dbSNP, COSMIC, etc.), and a basic knowledge of statistics is expected.
- Knowledge of primer design tools.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
