Job summary

Crawley Borough Council is seeking a Biodiversity Project Officer to help deliver ambitious plans for enhancing biodiversity, adapting to climate change, and establishing a centre of excellence for urban ecology.

The role involves coordinating habitat banks, leading BNG delivery on council projects, and engaging with ecologists, communities and planning teams to embed nature recovery in development and planning processes.

Qualifications

• Strong understanding of biodiversity, habitat management and ecological planning.
• Knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), Environment Act 2021, and planning policy.
• Experience applying BNG metrics and delivering biodiversity enhancements.
• Experience undertaking ecological surveys and producing clear reports.
• Experience working with stakeholders and managing environmental projects.
• Degree or equivalent in ecology, environmental management or related field.

Responsibilities

• Establish Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) habitat banks and attract investment in green infrastructure.
• Lead on BNG delivery for council-led development projects.
• Undertake or commission ecology and habitat surveys.
• Develop and oversee biodiversity management plans for individual sites.
• Support the creation of a borough-wide biodiversity action plan.
• Collaborate with colleagues, communities and external partners.
