Job summary

South Gloucestershire Council is seeking a Bikeability Instructor to deliver high-quality cycle training for children and adults, fostering confidence and road safety across communities.

You will work outdoors in various conditions, promoting opportunities to schools and groups, with an annualised 600-hour contract (about 11.51 hours weekly). DBS check is required and some evenings/weekends may be involved.

Qualifications

  • Competent and experienced cyclist with the ability to ride in varied road conditions; must provide own bike and helmet.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to build positive relationships with learners and stakeholders.
  • Experience with children; good availability during school hours; able to commit to at least two days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality cycle training to children, adults and families, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Promote cycle training opportunities to schools, community groups and organisations to increase uptake.

How you'll make a difference

As a Bikeability Instructor, you will play a key role in helping children and adults develop the skills, confidence and knowledge to cycle safely and independently. Through the delivery of high-quality cycle training, you will support road safety, encourage active travel and promote healthier, more sustainable journeys across our communities.

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are confident cyclists, effective communicators and positive role models. Working with a range of participants, you will use your knowledge and practical skills to create a safe, engaging and supportive learning environment, helping people of all ages gain the confidence to cycle safely for life.

What you will be doing
  • It will be your responsibility to deliver high-quality training to children, adults and families throughout the year, including some evening and weekend sessions. Adapting your approach to meet the needs of different participants, you will help learners develop the skills and confidence to cycle safely and indecently.
  • You will promote cycle training opportunities to individuals, schools, community groups and other organisations, supporting the wider uptake of active travel across South Gloucestershire.
  • As a confident and experienced cyclist, you will be comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, maintaining a professional and positive approach while ensuring training is delivered safely and effectively.
What we need from you
  • It is essential that you are a competent and experienced cyclist, confident riding in a variety of road and traffic conditions. You must be able to provide your own bicycle and cycle helmet, with the helmet worn at all times when delivering training.
  • You will have strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide clear instructions and build positive relationships with children, adults and professional stakeholders. You will be confident adapting your approach to meet the needs of different learners, ensuring training is engaging, inclusive and effective.
  • We require you to have some experience of working with children and a good level of availability during school hours, with the flexibility to work at least two days per week. A commitment to promoting road safety, active travel and positive learning experiences will be key to success in this role.
What you need to know
  • This position is being offered as an annualised contract of 600 hours throughout the year - 11.51 hours weekly
  • Travel time and expenses paid.
  • Please note that due to the nature of this role it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained for this post.
