Job summary

Caterpillar in Peterborough, UK is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join the Component Engineering Base Engine Team. The role focuses on delivering design solutions for new products, working with global teams, suppliers and customers to meet demanding requirements.

You will design engine components, develop system-level concepts, and lead projects within a multi-disciplined environment. Excellent CAD skills and a track record of delivering complex engine designs are essential.

Qualifications

• Expert level CREO10 CAD geometry.
• Strong understanding of rotating systems, valvetrain, lubrication, breather and cooling systems.
• Knowledge of casting and machining processes for complex cast iron components.
• Minimum of 6 years design experience in CAD.
• Strong technical background in mechanical or automotive engineering.
• Good understanding of manufacturing and assembly principles.

Responsibilities

• Design and package engine components including major aluminium and cast iron castings, geartrain, valvetrain, drivetrain and in-cylinder parts.
• Contribute to system design development for breather, cooling, FEAD & lubrication systems.
• Lead cross-functional global teams to meet customer durability and functional requirements.
• Develop strong relationships with suppliers.
• Plan and manage project deliverables; lead sub-projects.
• Conduct FMEA for components and systems to identify design risks and validation needs.
• Generate and conduct design reviews to gain approvals.
• Maintain progress communication with peers, team leader and stakeholders.
• Develop drawings to Caterpillar standards and data to release parts for prototype and production.
• Work with suppliers using APQP methodology and tools.

Salary: £49,519 + dependent upon experience

Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Design Engineer to join the Component Engineering Base Engine Team as we approach a period of significant investment to bring new products to the market. This role will be focused on design solutions to address challenging requirements, from projects within New Product Introduction. The successful candidate will serve as an experienced contributor on assignments that are complex in nature, working with individuals and teams across global Manufacturing sites, suppliers and customers. What You Will Do

As a Design Engineer in the team, you will be expected to have strong relevant design experience, knowledge of IC engines and be able to lead, plan and execute challenging tasks and projects.

Tasks will include:

• Design and packaging engine components such as major aluminium and cast iron castings, geartrain, valvetrain, drivetrain and in-cylinder components.
• Input to system design development for the breather, cooling, FEAD & lubrication system
• Working in a multi-disciplined global team to ensure solutions meet customer, durability and functional requirements
• Developing strong relationships with suppliers
• Planning and managing project and sub-project deliverables, ability to lead
• Conducting risk assessment through effective FMEA generation on components and systems to identify and address design risks and determine validation needs.
• Generate and conduct design reviews to gain wider approval
• Maintain communication to peers, team leader and stakeholders with progress against planned activities
• Development of drawings to Caterpillar standards and other technical data to support the release of parts for prototype and volume production.
• Work with suppliers using APQP methodology and tools

What You Have

Basic requirements

Expert level of expertise in complex CAD geometry using CREO10

A sound understanding of the requirements of systems that interact with these components such as Rotating Systems, Valvetrain, Lubrication, Breather and Cooling systems, Bolted joint and sealing experience

Strong understanding of casting and machining processes related to casting of complex cast iron components

Minimum of 6 years design experience in CAD

Strong technical background (HNC or technical degree preferred in mechanical or automotive engineering) though other qualifications or experience are equally valued

Good understanding of Component Manufacturing principles & processes

Good understanding of Manufacturing Assembly principles

Design knowledge of engine & mechanical components and systems

Self-motivation and an ability to manage and deliver tasks to meet established commitments.

Excellent communications skills & Teamwork To collaborate & manage interactions on behalf of Caterpillar with external suppliers to develop design solutions.

Desirable requirements

• Knowledge and usage of Team Centre – or similar data management software
• Experience of running and participating in FMEA
• Experience in component and engine validation & verification
• Experience gained in the off-highway diesel or machine sector
• Experience with alternative fuels and spark ignited engines
• Familiarity with the APQP methodology
