Job summary

Caterpillar is seeking a Senior Design Engineer in Peterborough, UK, to join the Component Engineering Base Engine Team. You will design engine components, manage projects, and collaborate with global teams and suppliers to meet durability and performance goals.

The role requires strong CAD skills (CREO10), at least 6 years of CAD design experience, and an ability to lead tasks within a multi-disciplinary environment.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years design experience in CAD
  • Expert level CAD geometry using CREO10
  • Strong understanding of engine-related systems (Breather, Cooling, Lubrication)
  • Good understanding of casting and machining of complex iron components
  • Technical background (HNC or related degree) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Design and packaging engine components including major aluminium and cast iron castings, geartrain, valvetrain and in‑cylinder components
  • Input to system design development for breather, cooling, FEAD & lubrication system
  • Work with a multi-disciplined global team to meet durability and functional requirements
  • Develop strong relationships with suppliers
  • Plan and manage project and sub‑project deliverables, ability to lead
  • Conduct risk assessment through FMEA to identify design risks and validation needs
  • Generate and conduct design reviews to gain wider approval
  • Maintain communication with peers, team leader and stakeholders on progress against plan
  • Develop drawings to Caterpillar standards for prototype and production
  • Work with suppliers using APQP methodology and tools

Job Title: Senior Design Engineer
Salary: £49,519 + dependent upon experience
Location: Peterborough, UK

Job Summary
  • We are currently seeking a Design Engineer to join the Component Engineering Base Engine Team as we approach a period of significant investment to bring new products to the market. This role will be focused on design solutions to address challenging requirements, from projects within New Product Introduction. The successful candidate will serve as an experienced contributor on assignments that are complex in nature, working with individuals and teams across global Manufacturing sites, suppliers and customers.

What You Will Do:

As a Design Engineer in the team, you will be expected to have strong relevant design experience, knowledge of IC engines and be able to lead, plan and execute challenging tasks and projects. Tasks will include:

  • Design and packaging engine components such as major aluminium and cast iron castings, geartrain, valvetrain, drivetrain and in‑cylinder components.
  • Input to system design development for the breather, cooling, FEAD & lubrication system
  • Working in a multi-disciplined global team to ensure solutions meet customer, durability and functional requirements
  • Developing strong relationships with suppliers
  • Planning and managing project and sub‑project deliverables, ability to lead
  • Conducting risk assessment through effective FMEA generation on components and systems to identify and address design risks and determine validation needs.
  • Generate and conduct design reviews to gain wider approval
  • Maintain communication to peers, team leader and stakeholders with progress against planned activities
  • Development of drawings to Caterpillar standards and other technical data to support the release of parts for prototype and volume production.
  • Work with suppliers using APQP methodology and tools
What You Have:

Basic requirements

  • Expert level of expertise in complex CAD geometry using CREO10
  • A sound understanding of the requirements of systems that interact with these components such as Rotating Systems, Valvetrain, Lubrication, Breather and Cooling systems, Bolted joint and sealing experience
  • Strong understanding of casting and machining processes related to casting of complex cast iron components
  • Minimum of 6 years design experience in CAD
  • Strong technical background (HNC or technical degree preferred in mechanical or automotive engineering) though other qualifications or experience are equally valued
  • Good understanding of Component Manufacturing principles & processes
  • Good understanding of Manufacturing Assembly principles
  • Design knowledge of engine & mechanical components and systems
  • Self‑motivation and an ability to manage and deliver tasks to meet established commitments.
  • Excellent communications skills & Teamwork
  • To collaborate & manage interactions on behalf of Caterpillar with external suppliers to develop design solutions.
Desirable requirements
  • Knowledge and usage of Team Centre – or similar data management software
  • Experience of running and participating in FMEA
  • Experience in component and engine validation & verification
  • Experience gained in the off‑highway diesel or machine sector
  • Experience with alternative fuels and spark ignited engines
  • Familiarity with the APQP methodology
