Responsibilities include:

  1. Access, plan, implement, and evaluate individual patient care.
  2. Communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and the multidisciplinary team.
  3. Co-ordinate patient-centred care from admission to discharge.
  4. Maintain accurate patient records using various clinical systems.
  5. Act as patients’ advocate.
  6. Promote the health and empowerment of patients.
  7. Identify changing patient needs and communicate changes to others.
  8. Work with multiple teams and clinical areas (appropriate to your qualification).
  9. Access mandatory training and clinical skills.

Additional responsibilities:
  1. Follow trust policies and procedures (e.g., risk reporting).
  2. Contribute to the development of the ward/department by attending meetings and supporting the implementation of change.
  3. Act as a resource link nurse for the ward.
  4. Develop oneself and contribute to the development of others.
  5. Handle patients' valuables and cash as required.
  6. Ensure stock levels are maintained.
  7. Manage resources within allocated budget.

Staff responsibilities:
  1. Participate in the education and supervision of the ward team, including students.
  2. Act as Team or Shift leader.
  3. Mentor student nurses and unqualified staff, following appropriate training.
  4. Supervise the ward team in the absence of the ward sister or senior nurse to develop managerial skills.
  5. Accept the concept of clinical supervision.
