We are seeking patient, caring and alert Support Workers for Luke, born in 2012. Luke is a very sociable young boy with a lovely smile, and really loves swimming, walking, physical play, going on leisure outings. Being around familiar people and his peers along with his iPad is really important to him. He lives at home with his mother with other family members living close by. He enjoys going out and about and can take you straight to his favourite sausage rolls in the local supermarket!
Luke suffered a severe brain injury at birth, he is a fully mobile, but non-verbal and a very active young boy and requires full support for all his personal care needs and is doubly incontinent. Due to Luke's learning disability he has very limited awareness of danger and requires 24/7 supervision.
Your role will be to support Luke with personal care and accessing meaningful activities in and out of the home, sometimes with his mother as second support. As Luke loves to swim you will need to be water confident. You will learn how to communicate with Luke using non-verbal communication and his talk pad. Luke needs close supervision at all times to ensure his safety and you will need to understand strategies that help keep him focussed and offer a distraction to stay calm. Using positive language, repeating instructions and allowing him time to complete tasks if he feels they are important to him, playing 'hide and seek' and making him laugh.
This is an excellent opportunity for Bank Support Workers to develop existing skills and support this very special young boy. A truly rewarding role for someone who is able to communicate effectively and an ability to work with patience, tact, understanding, warmth and compassion.
