Job Role and Responsibilities

Purpose: A key member of the ward team supporting Registered Nurses in assessing, planning, and implementing patient care. Deliver care as per individual care plans and liaise with families as appropriate.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist qualified staff with patient care assessments and implementation, undertaking routine tasks to promote wellbeing, dignity, and treatment.
  2. Provide practical support and responsive care for patients' personal needs, ensuring compliance with procedures and legislation.
  3. Monitor and observe patients' wellbeing, promptly reporting any unusual physical, mental, or emotional occurrences.
  4. Carry out delegated interventions following training and competency, including observation, engagement, escorting on leave, and de-escalation of violence.
  5. Contribute to team-based patient care and participate in ward meetings.
  6. Assist in maintaining stock levels and ward cleanliness, adhering to infection control policies.
  7. Develop professional relationships with patients, colleagues, and visitors, responding courteously to requests and inquiries.
  8. Promote a supportive environment for patients, relatives, and carers.
  9. Ensure a quality service that provides value for money.
  10. Handle telephone and personal inquiries courteously and assist visitors warmly.
Leadership and Resources

Provide guidance to new staff and agency workers, and responsibly manage ward resources.

Confidentiality and Data Security

Maintain confidentiality, security, and accuracy of records, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Minimum NVQ Level 1 or GCSEs in Mathematics and English.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and basic IT skills.
Experience and Training

No specific experience required; completion of the Care Certificate during probation is mandatory.

Communication Skills

Effective written, verbal, and presentation skills tailored to diverse audiences.

Working Environment

Considerations include travel, overnight stays, and workload management outside typical expectations.

Safeguarding

All staff must adhere to safeguarding policies, attend relevant training, and understand local safeguarding procedures.
