University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Emergency Practitioner Team Lead. This role combines clinical practice with leadership, education and governance across the EDs at Birmingham Heartlands and Good Hope Hospitals.

You will lead the EP service, supervise learners, and drive service improvement while maintaining your clinical practice, with ad hoc support to Solihull UTC.

Qualifications

  • Registered nurse or HCPC registered professional with relevant practice posts.
  • Postgraduate training/competence in minor injury and illness management.
  • Evidence of leadership, governance and education activity in practice.

Responsibilities

  • Provide autonomous assessment, diagnosis and management of minor injuries/illnesses.

Job Summary

Join our Emergency Practitioner Team and help shape the future of Emergency Practitioner services
across the Emergency Departments at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
We are seeking an experienced Emergency Practitioner Team Lead who is a Registered Adult Nurse
Emergency Practitioner, Paediatric Emergency Practitioner or Paramedic Emergency Practitioner
with experience in the autonomous assessment, diagnosis and management of minor injuries and
minor illnesses, including Non-Medical Prescribing.
This is an exciting opportunity to combine clinical practice with leadership, education, governance
and service development. Working primarily at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital or Good Hope
Hospital, with ad hoc support to Solihull Urgent Treatment Centre, you will provide clinical and
operational leadership while maintaining your own clinical practice.
You will play a key role in workforce development, quality improvement, service innovation and the
continued development of Emergency Practitioner services. You will influence clinical pathways, lead
improvement initiatives and contribute to the education, mentorship and supervision of Emergency
Practitioners and other staff.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

Provide autonomous assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of patients presenting with minor injuries and illnesses, including Non-Medical Prescribing. Deliver safe, effective, patient-centred care in line with clinical pathways, policies and professional standards. Lead the day-to-day management of the Emergency Practitioner service, ensuring safe staffing, patient flow and quality care. Provide visible clinical leadership and support departmental and Trust objectives. Supervise, coach and support Emergency Practitioners, junior staff, students and learners. Support staff development and competency maintenance with Lead Educators. Support audit, quality improvement, incident review, risk management and patient safety initiatives. Promote compliance with safeguarding, infection prevention and control, health and safety, and Trust policies. Work collaboratively with consultants, GPs, community services and multidisciplinary teams. Contribute to service improvement and innovation. Maintain clinical competence and undertake Emergency Practitioner duties within scope of practice. Act on behalf of the Matron as delegated and represent the service at meetings and forums. Support admission avoidance through assessment, treatment, referral and discharge planning. Contribute to workforce planning, recruitment, appraisal and performance management. Maintain high standards of practice and professionalism. Based at BHH or GHH ED, with ad hoc support to Solihull UTC as required.

Essential

Nursing & Midwifery Council RegisteredNurse or HCPC Registered Paramedic or Physiotherapist

  • Professional knowledge acquiredthrough degree supplemented byevidence of post graduate academiccourses, short course and developmentof clinical competencies in practiceevidenced in the following areas:
  • Minor Injury Management (Level6/7)
  • Consultation Skills
  • Physical Examination Skills
  • IRMER (Ionising Radiation Medical)
  • Interpretation of Images (Red Dotcourse)
  • Adult / Child Life Support Courses
  • PGD Training / practice aligned toTrust procedures
  • Minor Illness Management (Level6/7) or Non-Medical Prescriber withwillingness to undertake the postgraduate element not completed
  • Plus further specialist training to masters equivalent level.
Experience
Essential
  • Considerable experience working as aBand 7 (or equivalent) EmergencyPractitioner in autonomous assessmentof minor injury and minor illness.
  • Demonstrable ability / experience inworking in a multi professional approachto health care delivery and candemonstrate appreciation forcomplexities of patient access to primary/secondary and voluntary care settings.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the NHSEngland Urgent and Emergency Care --Emergency Practitioner Framework2023.
  • Can demonstrate understanding of theNational NHSEmergency Care target andthe relationship with the role.
  • Demonstrable scope of extendedpractice relevant to the role and canevidence post graduate training in skillsrelated to the role including:
  • Plastering
  • Suturing
  • Wound management /assessment
  • Experience in the supervision, mentoringand assessment of learners and juniorstaff.
  • Experience in leading and managingteams working in a health / care relatingpractice setting.
  • Experience in participating in the development and updating of policy andprocedure.Experience in supporting service changeand improvement in a health and carerelated practice setting.
  • Demonstrable understanding of UK NHSframeworks and approaches toEmergency and Urgent Care and itsapplication across NHS services.
  • Well-developed understanding of Child /Adult Safeguarding.
Desirable
  • Experience in the recruitment and selection ofstaff
Additional Criteria
Essential

Being able to work a flexible shiftpattern to cover out of hours, nights,weekend, and public holidays across 7days a week.

  • Ability to travel across all UHB sites andto external sites if required.
