Band 6 Specialist Speech & Language Therapist

Our tertiary centre can offer the best of both worlds. Our supportive, innovative and forward-thinking SLT team at QEHB has the opportunity to welcome a Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist which is partially rotational in nature. The static element of this post is within the Healthcare for Older People (HCOP) team with the remaining element being rotational across specialities. This is a 12 month fixed term post.

We have a large yet close-knit, highly skilled team who contribute to our robust supervision structure. Innovation, participation in research and clinical/professional development are actively encouraged. We have well-established SLT led Videofluoroscopy, FEES and SVR services so opportunities to access these instrumental assessments to help to shape your clinical practice would also be available.

Main duties of the job

This role is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The successful candidate would be part of the Healthcare for Older People's Team and benefit from 9 month rotations for the remainder of their working week. Rotational specialities include: Stroke, Head & Neck Cancer, Voice, Respiratory Support Unit, ITU, Outpatients, Medicine, and Specialist Surgery. The role is largely based on acute wards with opportunities for outpatient work through some of the rotations.

We have a large team who share a caseload of diverse patient cohorts so being a team player is essential. Each team has a team leader, peer specialist SLTs, NQP SLTs and SLTAs who are all supported by Clinical Leads, a Professional Lead and a Consultant SLT. We would welcome a candidate who is has experience working with patients in the specialist areas but our supportive team will be willing to support your development.

Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

*assessing and managing patients with swallowing and communication disorders

*service development and audit

*training of junior colleagues and students

*working flexibly and thriving in a fast-paced environment

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • BSc or recognised MSc degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Membership of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
  • Current registration with HCPC.
  • Advanced competencies such as SVR, tracheostomy, FEES or videofluoroscopy.
Experience
  • Experience of working within an adult inpatient setting.
  • Experience of working independently with adult dysphagia caseload.
  • Experience of working successfully as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of assessment and management of dysphagia, dysarthria, dyspraxia, dysphonia, and dysphasia.
  • Experience working with the speciality caseload.
  • Experience of holding own clinical caseload.
  • Membership of a relevant Clinical Excellence Network (CEN).
  • Experience supervising or training junior colleagues.
  • Experience of working within the NHS.
Additional Criteria
  • Keen to embrace change and work flexibly to support the patient caseload and wider team.
  • Punctual and reliable.
  • Ability to use required IT systems effectively.
  • Ability to work weekends as part of a 7 day working pattern (when appropriate service delivery allows and commences).
  • Ability to communicate in more than one language (e.g. bilingual)
