Job overview

The Critical Care Outreach Team (CCOT) at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital are committed to patient safety. We are currently looking for a band 6 nurse to join our dynamic team. Part time hours would be considered for candidates with the necessary experience.

We are a nurse led service with Consultant intensivist support. We offer a first line response service to all adult patients. Providing hands on support and advice for all healthcare professionals to ensure prompt care to the acutely unwell patient. The team work with the organization in the detection of deteriorating patients.

Suitable candidates would demonstrate good fundamental critical care skills and recently been working within the acute setting.

This is a one year fixed term contract or a secondment opportunity. If you are applying for a secondment please speak to your Line Manager first and visit your Trust's Secondment Policy.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work autonomously to optimise care and improve outcomes for the acutely unwell/critically ill or deteriorating patient throughout the trust. This will be achieved through assessment, timely intervention, prompt escalation / transfer and care planning.

The post holder will be the first point of contact for a deteriorating patient or the follow up of a patient discharged from critical care. Through education, training and support they will promote the early identification and appropriate management of the deteriorating / critically ill patient, sharing skills and knowledge with members of the multi-professional team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·To provide an integrated hospital wide approach to critical care.

·To provide specialised advice, support and interventions to patients within the ward environment, supported by appropriate assessment, observation and treatment, to a multi-disciplinary team caring for critically ill patients.

·To respond to and optimise the patients physiological recovery, identifying those patients that would benefit from admission into the critical care environment.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Current NMC registration
  • Post registration course in critical care or adult emergency care or equivalent

Experience

  • Previous critical care or adult emergency care experience or previous critical care outreach experience
  • Recent teaching experience

Knowledge

  • Specialist knowledge in acute care underpinned by theory and experience
  • Knowledge of non-invasive ventilation, inotropic support, vascular access devices, care of artificial airways
  • Physical assessment skills
  • Ability to analyse a range of observations and formulate plans

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
