Qualifications

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Technical Instructor to join our outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation team at St Thomas' Hospital. You will be a key member of the team coordinating and delivering pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with chronic lung conditions in Lambeth and Southwark.

The post holder will have excellent communication skills and will gain experience supervising specialist exercise for patients.

The funding for this post has been obtained from NHS England for the expansion of pulmonary rehabilitation. The funding is for 12 months and we welcome secondments to the post from staff wishing to gain experience in the pulmonary rehabilitation setting as well as external candidates.

Main duties of the job

This post will require the post holder to deliver high quality exercise and education physiotherapy interventions for patients living with chronic lung disease.

You will be expected to:

  • Work independently within the pulmonary rehabilitation team
  • Complete assessments for pulmonary rehabilitation with support
  • Prescribe, progress and develop exercise programmes for patients
  • Support coordination of the running of the class and administrative processes associated with the programme
  • Assist and support team members

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Professional / Clinical responsibilities:

  • Run exercise and education sessions for patients participating in pulmonary rehabilitation programmes across South East London
  • Provide treatment to patients within set clinical protocols
  • Carry out assessments of patients with support and formulate appropriate care plans
  • Reassess patients to progress treatments and management
  • Work unsupervised as a technical instructor for the majority of the time
  • Evaluate patient responses and treatment outcomes
  • Complete onward referrals to other appropriate services
  • Comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety Regulations
  • Attend mandatory annual training (e.g. Fire, Manual Handling and Adult Basic Life Support)

  • Patient treatment experience using relevant clinical skills
  • Experience of management of exercise equipment
  • Experience of team working
  • Previous experience as a physiotherapy assistant or in the sports and fitness industry
Knowledge/Qualifications
  • Completed NVQ Level 4 or equivalent experience in the sports and fitness industry
  • Member of Assistants SIG
Skills
  • Knowledge of healthcare delivery and the role of the physiotherapist
  • Ability to treat patients within prescribed clinical protocols unsupervised
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to teach other physiotherapy assistants
  • Competent in Microsoft Word and Excel
