Job summary

University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust is seeking a motivated Pharmacy Technician to join the team during an exciting NHS transformation. After training, you will manage medicine orders, support ward staff and participate in discharge-related activities to optimise patient care.

Qualifications

  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma or equivalent qualification in pharmacy technology.
  • Accredited accuracy checker status.
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Responsibilities

  • Order medicines for individual patients autonomously after training.
  • Request in-patient medicines using the electronic order system.
  • Refer suitable patients for follow-up medicine support with local pharmacies.

Job description

We are seeking a passionate, proactive and committed Pharmacy Technician who is eager to contribute to outstanding patient care. This is an exciting opportunity to join our pharmacy team during a transformative period following the recent implementation of Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA). Main duties of the job
  • Obtaining drug histories using summary care records and reconciling against the patient's prescription chart
  • Assessing patients own medicines
  • Co-ordinating discharge planning in conjunction with pharmacy and ward staff
  • Ordering patients medicines as part of discharge preparation

Participation in the weekend rota (1 in 4 weekends) is a core requirement of the role. In addition, there will be a requirement to work a late night shift covering ACT duties in the dispensary.

The pharmacy team are forward thinking, passionate and continually strive to improve the delivery of patient focused pharmaceutical care and optimise the use of medicines within the Trust.

Once training is complete the post holder will be able to:
  • Autonomously order medicines for individual patients
  • Request medication for in-patient use using the electronic order system
  • Refer suitable patients for follow-up medicine support with their local pharmacies via the DMS system
  • Assist with the review of ward stock lists to reduce risk and medication wastage
  • Proactively advise on and ensure the safe and secure storage of medicines on the ward
  • Line manage junior staff members
  • Be a named mentor for trainee staff and actively support them through their training and competencies
Qualifications
  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians or equivalent nationally recognised qualification
  • Accredited accuracy checker
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
Desirable
  • Medicines optimisation qualification
Experience Essential
  • One year post qualification experience in an acute hospital setting
  • One year experience undertaking medicine reconciliation. Evidence of competence to be provided
  • Experience of POD or equivalent schemes
Desirable
  • Experience of undertaking audits
Skills, Ability and Knowledge Essential
  • Extensive knowledge of clinical pharmacy practice and ward based working evidencing their own competence
  • Ability to present information concisely and clearly
  • Supervisory skills
  • Self motivated and ability to work independently
