Job summary

University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust is seeking a Rotational Pharmacy Technician to gain broad hospital experience with exposure to EPMA implementation and Medicines Optimisation. This 12-month fixed term contract or secondment offers development across multiple services at Royal Stoke and other sites.

The role requires NVQ 3 in Pharmaceutical Services or equivalent and full GPhC registration, plus strong IT and communication skills to support a high-quality pharmaceutical service.

Qualifications

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Able to use pharmacy IT systems and dispensing technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Dispense controlled drugs using electronic registers and manage stock within the pharmacy.
  • Provide controlled drug top ups and replenishment to theatre areas.
  • Develop experience with IT systems including Ascribe and automated dispensing and prescription tracking systems.
  • Support medicines stock control, inventory management and medicines optimisation on wards.

We are seeking a motivated and organised pharmacy technician with strong problem solving skills to join the pharmacy department at Royal Stoke, University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to join our team during a transformative period, following the successful implementation of Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA) across the trust.

This post is offered as a 12 month fixed term contract or secondment opportunity and provides an excellent chance to gain a wide range of hospital pharmacy experience within a large and innovative NHS organisation.

Main duties of the job

As one of our Rotational Pharmacy Technicians, you will gain experience across a variety of pharmacy services, including:

  • Dispensing controlled drugs using electronic registers from automated storage cabinets
  • Providing a controlled drug top up and replenishment services to theatre areas
  • Developing experience with IT Systems including Ascribe, Automated dispensing systems & Prescription Tracking systems
  • Supporting the safe and effective management of medicines through stock control and inventory management
  • Contributing to medicines optimisation services on wards
  • Supporting the training and development of pharmacy staff

This is a varied role that will allow you to develop your technical knowledge, clinical understanding and operational skills whilst working alongside experienced pharmacy professionals.

We are looking for an individual who is a strong team player, able to adapt to changing priorities and committed to delivering a high-quality service. You will need excellent attention to detail, a high level of accuracy and a clear understanding of the scope and limitations of your role.

You should be able to follow written procedures, work effectively under supervision, prioritise your workload and complete tasks accurately within agreed timescales.

Essential

  • NVQ level 3 in Pharmaceutical Services or National BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent nationally recognised qualification plus Accredited underpinning knowledge

  • Member of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians
Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 1 year recent experience in either a hospital pharmacy or community pharmacy setting
  • Commitment and evidence of professional updating and continuous professional development
  • Patient counselling skills - pleasant professional manner; knowledge of use of medicines and advising patients; assessing patient's pharmaceutical care needs

  • Supervisory skills to supervise Pharmacy Assistants and Student Pharmacy Technicians

  • Computer literate with good general keyboard skills for using the pharmacy computer systems, including ordering and receiving stock and rectifying stock discrepancies.
