Job summary

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting for a Band 4 Maintenance Technician based in Sutton. You will perform unsupervised, sometimes non-routine tasks, ensuring safety and compliance across building elements, plant and equipment.

Role involves working in hazardous areas, supporting planned maintenance schemes, and maintaining documentation under the Health & Safety at Work Act and PUWER regulations. A background in carpentry, joinery or building services is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Essential: GCSE/‘O’ Level Maths and English or equivalent.
  • Essential: City & Guilds 6217-02 Carpentry & Joinery; NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry & Joinery; or BTEC/ONC in Building/Construction Services.
  • Desirable: Additional relevant competencies.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake work as requested by Building Supervisor/Estates Officer.
  • Work in accordance with Trust safety rules and procedures.
  • Participate in a range of planned maintenance schemes and labour control tasks.
  • Carry out building surveys and compile data as instructed.

Job description

Job Summary

Perform unsupervised work including activities that may be demanding and/or non-routine.

Responsible for testing, maintenance and fault finding on all building elements, plant and equipment including but not limited to:

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
  • To undertake all work activities as requested by the Building Supervisor/Estates Officer.
  • To work in accordance with Trust safety rules and procedures at all times.
  • To be prepared to work in hazardous areas taking all safety measures to prevent danger, avoid injury and prevent damage to equipment.
  • To actively participate in the operation and control of building planned maintenance schemes.
  • To actively participate in the operation of facilities labour control scheme, by completion of all paperwork and reports as required by the scheme.
  • Carry out all work on equipment as required by the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, COSHH Regulations, Building and Construction Regulations and the Trust's Safety Policy.
  • To carry out building surveys and compile data, as and when instructed by line managers.
  • To work overtime to carry out repairs/maintenance not possible during normal hours.
  • To liaise with the Building Supervisor regarding plant or equipment failures, or deviations to regulations, and to request the supply of goods and/or services as necessary.
  • At all times when on duty or on call, to carry Trust communication devices such as mobile telephones, two-way radios or pagers to facilitate immediate response to emergencies.
  • Interpret and apply PUWER 1998 Regulations, the Construction Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations 1996 and the DDA Regulations 1999.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Basic education to GCSE/'O' Level in Maths and English or post-secondary Education in a relevant field
  • City & Guilds of London Institute Craft Certificate in Course 6217-02 Carpentry & Joinery

Or,

  • An equivalent qualification such as NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry & Joinery.

Or,

  • BTEC/ONC in Building or Construction Services.

Desirable

  • Additional relevant Competencies
Experience

Essential

  • Completion of a registered apprenticeship or structured training program in Building or Construction for a minimum of 3 years

Plus

  • Significant post training, site experience having demonstrated high versatility and flexibility.

And

  • Background in Building or Construction installation, alteration, maintenance, or repair.
  • Experience of Building plant, equipment, and woodworking machinery.
  • Capable working to deadlines.
  • Reasonably clear and effective in verbal and written communications.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of working in an acute Hospital environment or similar demanding role.
Additional Criteria

Essential

  • Ability to work without supervision and confident to take decisions based on own ability.
  • Adaptable to change.
  • Available for undertaking overtime.
  • Physically demanding role requiring manual handling of loads, extremes of temperature and the ability to work at heights or in confined spaces.
  • Appreciation of his/her own limitations

Desirable

  • Clean driving license
