Job summary

OpenAI is seeking a talented engineer to help design and build scalable systems that detect, track, and enforce against harm on our platforms. You will work with policy, safety operations and harm‑specialised teams to inform your designs and implement robust solutions.

You will learn from leading experts in AI harms, contribute to an interdisciplinary team, and stay ahead of adversaries by adopting the latest techniques and tools available.

Qualifications

• Have at least 5 years of software engineering experience in backend and data systems.
• Have at least 2 years experience in trust and safety analysis, investigation, and/or operations.
• Eager to learn from top experts on harms from AI and collaborate in interdisciplinary teams.
• Able to dive into the codebase and form effective design suggestions.
• Show a voracious, clear communication habit and willingness to share knowledge.
• Comfortable with ambiguity and changing conditions; see opportunities to add structure.
• Experience with machine learning is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

• Design and build scalable foundational systems for detecting, tracking, and enforcing against harm.
• Work with technical and non-technical experts to inform designs and implementations.
• Leverage OpenAI technologies to automate and augment harm detection and reasoning.
• Collaborate with policy, trust and safety operations, legal, investigations, and harm engineers.
• Stay ahead of adversaries by adopting new techniques and tools.
