Job summary

Transport for London (TfL) invites applications for an Auxiliary Assistant based at Acton Depot. You will provide operational support to production teams by assisting with component preparation, material handling and safe movement of assets within the depot, ensuring quality, safety and on-time production flow across REW and TMU.

The role requires hands-on experience with hand and power tools, a valid forklift licence, and a commitment to health and safety.

Qualifications

• Valid counterbalance forklift licence or proof of licence

Responsibilities

• Move components and assemblies using cranes, forklifts and depot vehicles
• Prepare and clean components and bogies for assembly
• Identify and retrieve materials from BOMs and stores requisitions
• Assist production staff with basic assembly tasks
• Ensure safety and environmental requirements are met
• Report defects and hazards promptly
• Maintain housekeeping in production and staging areas

Overview of project/role

To provide operational support to production teams by assisting with component preparation, material handling, and the safe movement of assets within the depot. This role ensures efficient workflow, quality preparation of components, and compliance with safety standards to maintain production schedules and service reliability across Rail Engineering Workshops (REW) and the Train Maintenance Unit (TMU).

Key Accountabilities

• Operate overhead cranes, forklift trucks and approved electric vehicles to move components and assemblies — ensuring timely, safe delivery to production areas and minimising workflow delays
• Prepare and clean components, bogies and carriages for assembly — to meet quality standards and readiness for production
• Identify and retrieve raw materials and manufactured components from Bills of Materials (BOMs), stores requisitions and manufacturing specifications — to ensure the correct items are available when required
• Assist production staff with minor assembly tasks — to enable efficient workflow and reduce downtime
• Comply with health, safety and environmental requirements, including safe use of hand and power tools — to maintain a safe working environment and prevent incidents
• Report defects, hazards and unsafe practices promptly — to prevent accidents and maintain operational integrity
• Operate mechanised materials handling equipment and depot vehicles in line with licenses and authorisations — to protect people, equipment and infrastructure
• Maintain workplace housekeeping standards in production and staging areas — to support efficiency, safety and an organised working environment

Knowledge

• Valid counterbalance forklift license or proof of previous valid licence
• Basic Health and Safety at Work knowledge
• Understanding of equipment and ability to dismantle to appropriate subsystem/component level
• Good working knowledge and understanding of forklift operation

Experience

• Experience of using basic hand and power tools e.g. sanders/drills/power screw drivers etc.
• Experience in forklift driving
