Autism Support Worker - Primary School

Location: Ammanford
Pay: £14.25 per hour
Hours: Monday to Friday, during school hours
Hours: Term-time / school hours

About the role

We are looking for a caring, patient and enthusiastic Autism Support Worker to join a primary school setting in Ammanford, supporting a primary‑aged child within the classroom and wider school environment.

This is an education‑based role, working alongside the class teacher and school staff to help the child access learning, develop independence and take part in the full school day.

You will become an important part of the child's school team, providing consistent support while encouraging them to do as much as possible independently.

What will you be doing?

Your day will be varied and will involve supporting the child throughout their normal school routine.

This may include:

Supporting learning in the classroom

• Working alongside the class teacher to help the child access lessons and activities.
• Breaking learning tasks down into manageable steps where needed.
• Providing additional explanation, prompts or encouragement to help the child understand and complete activities.
• Adapting resources or activities to make learning accessible.
• Supporting the child with reading, writing, numeracy and other curriculum activities.
• Helping the child remain engaged and focused during lessons.
• Encouraging the child to develop their independence rather than completing tasks for them.
• Celebrating progress and recognising achievements, however big or small.

Supporting communication and interaction

• Helping the child communicate their needs, choices and feelings.
• Supporting positive interactions with classmates.
• Encouraging participation in paired and group activities.
• Helping the child understand classroom expectations and social situations.
• Supporting friendships, cooperation and turn‑taking.

Supporting emotional wellbeing and regulation

• Providing a calm, reassuring and consistent presence throughout the day.
• Recognising when the child may be becoming overwhelmed or dysregulated.
• Using agreed strategies to support emotional regulation and positive behaviour.
• Helping the child understand and manage changes to their routine.
• Providing appropriate support during challenging moments while maintaining dignity and promoting independence.
• Supporting the child to return to learning when they are ready.

Supporting the wider school day

• Supporting transitions between lessons and different areas of the school.
• Accompanying the child during break and lunchtime.
• Encouraging positive play and social interaction.
• Supporting participation in PE, outdoor learning, assemblies, trips and other school activities.
• Helping the child manage changes in environment, routine or staffing.
• Supporting the child to participate as fully as possible in school life.

Working as part of the classroom team

You will work closely with the class teacher and other members of the school team to ensure the child's support is consistent and purposeful.
