Job description

This role is advertised on behalf of Pullman Rail, a subsidiary of Transport for Wales

Salary: up to £50,000 a year

At Pullman Rail we value diversity. It makes us stronger, helps us understand our customers better, make better decisions and be more innovative. Everyone’s different and has their own perspective, so we’re building a diverse team that mirrors the communities we serve. Through this, we’re determined to be one of Wales' leading inclusive employers.

Who we are

Pullman Rail is a specialist engineering company supporting the UK rail industry through vehicle maintenance, refurbishment, overhaul and component repair. Our teams work together to deliver high-quality solutions that keep the rail network moving.

The role

We are seeking an Assurance Manager to join our Engineering team.

The Assurance Manager will provide independent engineering assurance that Pullman Rail consistently delivers safe, compliant and high-quality engineering outputs. Leading our Quality, Competence and Inspection functions, you will ensure robust governance, effective assurance processes and continual improvement across our engineering operations.

Working closely with Engineering, Production and Support Functions, you will drive compliance with customer, regulatory and company requirements, while promoting a culture of quality, competence and operational excellence.

This is a key leadership role within a safety-critical engineering environment, providing independent challenge and assurance to ensure our engineering activities meet the highest standards of safety, quality and performance.

Role responsibilities
  • Leadership & Team Management – Lead, develop and support the Quality, Competence and Inspection teams, fostering a collaborative, high-performing culture focused on continuous improvement.
  • Quality Management & Assurance – Own and continually improve the Quality Management System, manage internal audit programmes, coordinate external certification audits and ensure compliance with ISO 9001, RISAS and the wider Integrated Management System.
  • Competence Management – Lead the Competence Management System, ensuring robust training, assessment, authorisation and assurance arrangements are in place to support safe and effective engineering delivery.
  • Engineering Inspection & Product Assurance – Provide strategic leadership for engineering inspection activities, ensuring effective product verification, management of non-conformances and continual improvement of inspection processes.
  • Performance & Continuous Improvement – Analyse quality and assurance data, identify trends and risks, support investigations into quality issues and engineering defects, and drive improvement initiatives across the business.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration – Work closely with Engineering, Operations, customers and external auditors to provide independent assurance, support business objectives and maintain the highest engineering standards.
Who we’re looking for

We are looking for an experienced assurance or quality professional with a proven track record of leading quality, compliance or engineering assurance activities within a regulated engineering environment, ideally within the rail industry or another safety-critical sector.

You will have extensive experience of Quality Management Systems, internal and external auditing, engineering governance and competence management, together with a strong understanding of engineering standards, product verification and continuous improvement. Experience of ISO 9001 is essential, while knowledge of RISAS, RISQS, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 would be highly advantageous.

As a confident leader, you will be capable of developing high-performing teams, influencing stakeholders at all levels and providing constructive challenge where engineering standards or compliance may be compromised. You will possess excellent analytical, organisational and communication skills, with the ability to interpret complex information, manage competing priorities and deliver meaningful improvements that support both operational excellence and customer satisfaction.

Note that you must hold the permanent right to work in the UK. We are not currently able to provide sponsorship.
