This role will see you working as part of the Manchester-based structural engineering team focussing on a diverse portfolio of North West projects alongside those across the UK and around the world. This is a technically demanding role and we are ideally looking for creative candidates with an interest/aptitude in computational techniques as well as being interested in being at the forefront of changes in the industry such as in reducing embodied carbon and modern methods of construction in structural design.

The ideal candidate will have experience across a wide variety of projects and sectors.
  • This is an opportunity to join an award-winning, industry-leading structures practice, renowned for delivering a strong portfolio of regional projects and with such an enviable portfolio of projects like the Coop Live, Manchester Airport Transformation, Manchester Museum Courtyard, British Museum Courtyard Roof, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and many more. We can offer a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of building design, with a focus on structural excellence, inspirational architecture, social value, and environmental sustainability.
  • Manchester Structures is a hard-working but friendly, supportive and inclusive team, and will offer an enjoyable and rewarding working environment with many opportunities for learning and career advancement. We operate as a small team working as part of the wider Buro Happold teams and supported by the wealth of knowledge and technical expertise.
  • Your next role
  • The role of an Associate Structural Engineer can be very varied, duties will include but are not limited to:
  • Preparation of Technical Specifications and checking the work/specifications of other Engineers in the team
  • Leadership of projects on behalf of the group, taking ownership for sustained and productive client relationships.
  • Reviewing job financial performance and managing resources accordingly.
  • Guiding less experienced team members in order to achieve project success.
  • Supporting delivery of the team's Performance and Development Review process.
  • Providing support in seeking new work from existing clients.
  • Preparing bid proposals and additional fee proposals (with the support of the Group Directors, Associate Directors and Bid team colleagues)
Your Skills & Experience
  • As an Associate Structural Engineer, we would expect that you will be able to demonstrate:
  • An outstanding foundation as a technical and project leader; demonstrated via a track record of successful delivery over a sustained period within the industry.
  • Mentoring and leadership experience of structural engineering and other multi-disciplinary engineering professionals, with the desire and ability to support the development of individuals' skills, whilst encouraging collaboration and cohesive teamwork.
  • A strong portfolio of UK project experience, ideally within multiple sectors and across both new build and refurbishment projects, although Buro Happold's varied portfolio will further extend your breadth of experience.
  • A solid educational foundation, with a BEng or MEng (or equivalent) degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status and membership of a relevant institution such as the ICE or IStructE.
  • Line management experience and mentorship of individuals through their own chartership journey.
  • Whilst not essential, engagement in the industry through institutional events and committees.
A place for everyone

Buro Happold values an individual's flexible approaches to working patterns as an important part of how you work and achieve balance. We welcome applications from those who are seeking flexibility in their careers.

Our exceptional portfolio of projects is the result of the diversity of thought, identities, backgrounds, and experiences that shape us. Appreciating each other’s differences is key, we want employees to feel they don’t have to mask elements of their identity to thrive.

We are working to change the lack of representation of marginalised groups in the built environment. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who feels they are underrepresented in the industry. We have much to learn from one another. Embracing differences allows us to develop the most innovative and elegant solutions.
