Job summary

Maxim Recruitment is partnering with a well-established construction consultancy to recruit an Associate Quantity Surveyor for its Manchester division. You will lead on project commercial functions, manage cost planning, procurement, and dispute-related exposure while supporting junior team members in a collaborative environment.

The successful candidate will handle pre- and post-contract QS duties across private and public sector projects, with a view toward taking the lead of the Manchester QS

Qualifications

  • This role requires a degree in Quantity Surveying or closely related subject.
  • MRICS membership achieved or in progress is advantageous; support towards Chartership is available.

Responsibilities

  • Lead commercial activities across projects with less supervision and greater client-facing responsibility.
  • Provide high-quality quantity surveying services to clients and monitor project costs.
  • Prepare and agree final accounts, budgets, and cost reporting.
  • Lead tender prep, appraisals and procurement recommendations.
  • Mentor junior team members and collaborate with advisory and expert teams.

Job description

An exclusive Associate Quantity Surveyor job for a degree-qualified professional seeking to further develop and lead in quantity surveying, cost management and advisory services. This opportunity offers exposure to private and public sector projects, a varied workload including traditional QS as well as dispute-related work, and the chance to take a leading role in the commercial delivery of projects within a supportive consultancy environment.

The successful Associate Quantity Surveyor will work across a diverse portfolio of construction and infrastructure projects in the private and public sectors with both contractor and client-side organisations.
The consultancy works on a diverse project portfolio including rail, airports, roads, highways, residential, commercial, education, healthcare and more.

The role offers the chance to contribute to both traditional quantity surveying services with responsibility for leading commercial activities across projects and supporting junior team members where appropriate.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone entreprenurial and client-facing with the ambition to become a Director and take the lead of the Manchester QS division in the near future.

Responsibilities and Duties

This Associate Quantity Surveyor job would suit a commercially astute professional seeking to take ownership of project commercial functions within a collaborative consultancy environment. The successful candidate will be expected to lead on small to medium-sized projects or take significant responsibility for major commissions, with less supervision and greater client-facing responsibility.

  • Provide high-quality quantity surveying services to clients
  • Lead commercial activities on projects and take ownership of project delivery responsibilities
  • Support the expert witness team on quantum claims*
  • Manage small to medium-sized projects or substantial elements of larger commissions
  • Establish client requirements for cost planning and cost estimating
  • Advise on procurement strategies and commercial approaches
  • Prepare tender and contract documentation
  • Carry out tender appraisals and provide procurement recommendations
  • Monitor, record and report project costs
  • Value completed works and arrange payments in accordance with contract requirements
  • Prepare budgets, progress reports and cost value reconciliations
  • Identify commercial risks and assess cost variations
  • Maintain variation records and risk registers
  • Issue notices in accordance with the contract conditions
  • Produce project reports and claims-related reports
  • Prepare and agree final accounts
  • Attend and lead project meetings, providing commercial input and advice
  • Keep up to date with construction industry requirements and market developments
  • Work collaboratively with advisory and expert teams where required
  • Support and mentor less experienced team members where appropriate
Desired Skills and Experience

This Associate Quantity Surveyor vacancy is likely to appeal to candidates with an established QS background who are keen to broaden their experience within a consultancy offering cost management, advisory and dispute-related exposure.

  • Previous experience in a consultancy, contractor, developer or related commercial environment
  • Strong numerical, commercial and data analysis skills
  • Good understanding of cost planning, tendering, valuations and final accounts
  • Ability to lead the delivery of both pre-contract and post-contract quantity surveying duties
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Positive approach to client care and problem solving
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Competent user of Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Ability to manage client relationships and support junior colleagues
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
  • Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying or closely related subject
  • MRICS achieved or working towards professional membership would be advantageous. Although support towards this can be provided.
