Job summary

Dyson in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, seeks an Associate Principal Embedded Software Engineer to lead embedded software in power electronics. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to take ideas from concept to prototype, delivering high-performance software for Dyson’s next generation products.

You will mentor engineers, drive project delivery and collaborate across teams to turn concepts into robust, testable solutions, ensuring safety and quality in fast-paced development environments.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electronic Engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience in motor drives, inverters, SMPS, heater control, chargers or battery management.
  • C/C++ programming for embedded systems is essential.
  • Experience with ARM-based microcontrollers and microprocessors.
  • Experience in MCU analogue data acquisition for sampling high-speed signals.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.

Responsibilities

  • Develop software for power electronic systems including motor drives and battery management systems.
  • Create and review resource-efficient embedded software on microcontrollers.
  • Lead one or more electronics software research projects.
  • Research emerging technologies via papers, patents and external collaboration.

About Us

The Electronic Systems Research Team is responsible for inventing and developing many of the key technologies that enable Dyson’s innovative new products. Our global team operates across the UK and Singapore, working on both established and emerging Dyson product categories. The team uses technology to solve problems that others ignore. Our UK team of creative engineers is growing, and we want to hear from you if you are interested in joining us to bring pioneering technologies from concept to reality in innovative consumer products, and build technology demonstrations and proof of concept product prototypes. The team cover a diverse range of research topics including power electronics, sensor technology, machine learning, embedded systems and embedded software. We work closely with internal Dyson teams, external research institutions and suppliers to consider all aspects of complex products including thermal design, optics, electromagnetics, aero-acoustics, mechanical design, microbiology and compliance. We are looking for inquisitive engineers who can take ownership of technical challenges and drive solutions through to completion to develop the electronic systems for the next generation of Dyson products.

About the Role

We are looking for an Associate Principal Embedded Software Engineer to join the Power Electronics discipline of our Research team, based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, U.K.

The Associate Principal role means being a technical leader in efficient embedded software in at least one field of power electronics such as motor control, power conversion, battery management, etc.

You will be working within a team of multidisciplinary engineers taking new ideas to a prototype level prior to transfer to our development teams.

The role will involve:
  • Developing software for power electronic systems including motor drives, battery management systems, chargers, heater control systems and other power conversion architectures.
  • Creating and reviewing resource efficient embedded software on microcontrollers.
  • Leading one or more electronics software research projects.
  • Researching emerging technologies through technical papers, patents and collaboration with external partners.
  • Designing, simulating, building and testing demonstration rigs and prototype systems to assess the feasibility of new technologies and products.
  • Coaching and mentoring to help develop capabilities in the team and drive towards more efficient, better quality and structured software.
  • Managing and developing our internal embedded software development process and tools.
  • Working with suppliers to help build business relationships to shape external microcontroller roadmaps for our business needs.
  • Selecting and evaluating current and next-gen microcontrollers to optimise cost, size, efficiency and performance.
  • Pursuing software optimisation opportunities to drive business value.
  • Working with cross-functional teams to plan project activities and take responsibility for technical delivery of embedded software.
  • Creating clear technical reports and presenting design concepts, test results and recommendations to stakeholders
  • Identifying technical risks, proposing mitigation strategies and sharing lessons learnt to drive continuous self-improvement and team improvement.
About You
  • Degree in Electronic Engineering or a related discipline, together with relevant experience in an electronics industry or research environment.
  • Experience and greater knowledge in at least one of the following fields: motor drives, inverters, SMPS, heater control, chargers, USB power delivery, battery management systems or power transfer.
  • Experience of C/C++ programming for embedded systems is essential.
  • Experience with ARM based microcontrollers and microprocessors.
  • Experience programming in assembly / machine code desirable.
  • Experience of MCU analogue data acquisition for sampling high-speed signals.
  • Working knowledge of Python for general scripting.
  • Experience of using MATLAB, Python or similar tools for simulation, data acquisition and analysis.
  • Experience of leading a software research or development project.
  • Experience agile working using Atlassian tools is desirable.
  • Experience creating verification and validation plans and executing structured testing activities.
  • Proficient in the use of laboratory equipment to set up experiments and make accurate electrical measurements.
  • Experience developing software to safety standards such as IEC 60730 or similar is desirable.
  • Experience in RISC-V is desirable.
  • Experience of safe working in a laboratory environment, testing and debugging software on mains voltage and high-speed machines is desirable.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team. Able to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to stakeholders from a wide range of technical disciplines.
