Job summary

Calibre Search is seeking an Associate Flood Risk Engineer to join the Leeds team. The role blends technical delivery with project leadership, client relations and mentoring of junior engineers on development-led schemes across the UK.

You'll work on FRA, drainage, EIA inputs and water management studies, collaborating with engineers, planners and environmental specialists in a hybrid Leeds-based setup with some UK-wide project involvement.

Associate Flood Risk Engineer Leeds

An established multidisciplinary Consultancy is looking to strengthen its Leeds team with the appointment of an Associate Flood Risk Engineer, offering the opportunity to take a leading role across major development projects while remaining closely involved in the technical work.

This isn't a position where reaching Associate level means stepping away from engineering. The role offers a genuine balance between technical delivery, project leadership, client relationships and supporting the development of other Engineers within the team.

The work is predominantly development-led and covers a varied portfolio of residential, commercial, regeneration and infrastructure schemes across the UK. You'll become involved from the early stages of projects, helping clients understand flood risk and drainage constraints and developing practical strategies that allow schemes to progress successfully through planning and environmental assessment.

A significant part of the position will involve leading and reviewing Flood Risk Assessments, drainage strategies, EIA inputs and wider catchment and water management studies. You'll also use your understanding of hydraulic modelling to interpret outputs, challenge assumptions and help shape appropriate solutions, rather than necessarily spending your time building models yourself.

Working as part of a wider multidisciplinary environment, you'll collaborate with Engineers, environmental specialists, planners and project managers, giving you exposure to projects where flood risk and water management form an important part of the overall development strategy.

There is also plenty of client and stakeholder involvement. You'll work directly with developers, local authorities, the Environment Agency, Lead Local Flood Authorities and water companies, representing the Consultancy in meetings and helping clients navigate the planning and regulatory process.

As you become established within the Leeds team, you'll have the opportunity to influence how the service develops. This will include mentoring and supporting junior Engineers, reviewing technical work, managing projects and fees, contributing to proposals and bids and helping strengthen existing and new client relationships.

The Consultancy is particularly interested in speaking with people who have developed their career within flood risk, drainage or water/environmental consultancy and understand how this work fits into the UK development and planning process.

You're likely to bring experience across areas such as:

• Flood Risk Assessments and development-led flood risk advice
• Surface water drainage and sustainable drainage strategies
• UK planning policy and flood risk guidance
• Environmental Impact Assessments and planning submissions
• Liaison with the Environment Agency, LLFAs, local authorities and water companies
• Hydraulic modelling and the interpretation of modelling outputs
• Technical report writing, checking and quality assurance
• Project, programme and budget management
• Supporting and developing less experienced Engineers

Experience across major development, regeneration or infrastructure projects would be particularly useful, while knowledge of DCO or other statutory consenting processes, nature-based solutions and wider catchment management would also be welcomed. Chartered status through CIWEM or another relevant professional institution would be advantageous, although strong experience and technical capability are equally important.

The position is based in Leeds with hybrid working available, alongside the opportunity to contribute to projects across the UK. Some occasional travel will be required for client meetings, project meetings and site visits.
